Real World 1500 Mile Low Down of new Ski Doo XR-S 900 Turbo vs. SideWinder

The Doo 1200 motor is not as good as a Yamaha 4 stroke. The 2009s had failures with either a water pump or oil pump gear. Primary clutches dont last, Ive never even ran across a fast 1200 doo. They had a laggy throttle as well. Not in the same league or they would still be using it.

I had a couple 09's and just an idler gear which was a easy swap and updated for 2010. Same problem with harmonics on the 1200 that plagues the triple Yamaha and eats clutches. Its a three cylinder four-stroke thing, easy swap to the PB80 and they run like a champ with no clutch rattle.

The 1200 Doo will make 500HP with turbo and fuel system added to a BONE stock unopened engine. Far more robust than ANY other four-stroke ever built stock for stock when adding boost and using a stock engine for boost. Even the Apex or Suzuki can't come close to that.

I had a NA 1200 that would take down the NA Apex even with all the typical mods done to the Apex. I wouldn't say they were slow & I was always first off the line with it. Laggy throttle? Ya right, obviously you've never thrown a leg over one, with a turbo added it would put you in the trees if you were not careful. My turbo 240HP 1200 would run with any 270-280HP Winder. The 1200 is an underdog to say the least, and if you happen to run up against a Motec 1200 it will leave any winder so far in the dust it wouldn't even be a close race. I've got a buddy that got rid of his winder and bought a Motec 1200 and it just plays with any Winder or Cat out there. Makes the 300HP winder look like an old Ovation.

The reason its not in use anymore is they had to pay Petronas royalties on it, all the Doo minions thought a 900t would be good enough. Stupid for them to ask for just a 900 with a turbo.

IMO the 1200 is the very best three cylinder four-stroke ever built to date. It makes the Yamaha 998 look wimpy. I'd rather have a turbo 1200 under my hood even now with a turbo. The 998 isn't anything special at all so I wouldn't be bragging about it.

Hey Mike,
So a 1200 doo can get 500hp without a set of aftermarket rods?
Not being a smart #*$&@ just seems really high for a stock rod motor.
I saw a 1200 motec doo at the wienie roast couple years back .....it was beasty!
Smoking 1100t’s like cheap cigars.
;):D

Not only can it utilize the stock rods, but stock pistons, rings, head gasket, head studs, valve springs and every other stock component it came from the factory with. Just don't deto it and it will hold together. It will take the ring lands out for certain with deto. Yep, its a stout beast of an engine. Can't hold 75LBs of boost on the big turbos like the big twin Suzuki can with the full complement of mods, but it is well built and super strong. No stock Yamaha four-stroke snowmobile engine can hold a candle to it, and it won't spit valve shims and keepers out of it either.

Sounds like a well built engine, especially a stock bottom end that’s able to hold that much cylinder pressure.
I “Doo” believe Dave has an Apex motor that’s up around 900hp tho.
:hide:

I know you said stock, and that’s super impressive.

That's all fine and dandy but the vast majority of riders simply don't have the desire to be spending big dollars on aftermarket turbos etc.
To date, nothing has been offered that can be bumped to 270hp on pump gas on software alone for about $500, and that is quite appealing.
