Real World 1500 Mile Low Down of new Ski Doo XR-S 900 Turbo vs. SideWinder

I know people who will not spend over ten grand new a sled. They always buy left over new sleds in the 8500 to 9000 dollar range.
They ride ski doo sleds so they have to buy new every two years because the sleds wont make it thru a third year without major issues.
In the long run my expensive Yamaha is less dollars spent.

First what everyone is missing, skidoo hasn’t made to date a 4 stroke snowmobile on the same hp to cc as Yamaha. ( and Yamaha used mostly valve train from the vector, nothing special , nitro valve train could be used, or technology from the R1 motor ) Skidoo doesn’t have a relable 1000cc motor to put out . Only way they can compete would be going back to the 1170 motor. If the 150-160hp sleds was that important to Yamaha they could just put a smaller turbo package on the sidewinder...6-8 psi boost. Which would be the only option with a 3 cylinder turbo as I don’t think they will put a updated R1 motor in , to expensive.
Yep that’s 1 way to fill the hp gap but can’t sell at same price as SW with nothing but less boost. Crying shame a NA version doesn’t fill the void then lower price and cost would make sense. OEMs tend to build what they can. Ace does a lot for doo but I don’t think it can compete with the SW. If doo did ultra boost the Ace they would market weight wars again probably not worth the trouble for low number of units sold but if Yamaha goes out could be our only option.

What happens if Doo takes on the the SW 4s monster hp market that is dominated by Yamaha? It’s only a matter of time until they Doo. Then Yamaha splits that market with Doo will profitability make sense for Yamaha to continue? Highly doubtful and Yes I agree the overall snowmobile market is shrinking and Yamaha is losing market share. I guess it’s better that Doo has something for everyone so all market segments have a product. In the end only the strong survive and looking like maybe only enough sales for Doo and Poo when the end comes. I hate to see the elimination of Yamaha and or AC but it seems to be happening before our eyes. Nothing ventured nothing gained is self fulfilling to the end.

I really don’t think they care.
We have been blessed with decent snow years here in the states, as soon as there’s a couple of bad snow years, things will change.
They know their time is limited in the snowmobiling market.

Watch what BRP does for the 2020 sxs as there will be hp increases .They did the same with the spark ace 60 90 110 and now the 900t .What's next ? Pay Attention .Theses Aftermarket guys will also need to get into the pwc and sxs performance business if they want to keep the doors open without the 998 guys .
I'd like to see Yamaha come out with 250hp stock sled for 2021.
I'd order one instantly.

Yep difficult to accept Yamaha is closing out but you are probably correct. I hate to see it but not much of a product line now so little to lose to leave the market. I always hoped Yamaha would reinvest in snowmobiles but since the market is shrinking they don’t have a lot on interest in snowmobiles. The chassis is Textron and little reason for Textron to share a new chassis with Yamaha the end is near. Textron cuts off Yamaha and the party is over for sure. I know Yamaha dealers that just sell snowmobiles and ATVs so the end is a killer for them.

I can't take all of this negative banter any longer regarding Yamaha's future in the snowmobile business and the dim future of our beloved sport from these naysayers any longer, so it's time to post something positive....

I've been hearing the broken record mantra "this is Yamahas last year in business, I just know it" for so many years now I've lost count.
I absolutely love the combined product Cat and Yamaha have put together and am counting down the sleeps till winter arrives again, I can hardly wait to squeeze the flipper!

https://www.quora.com/Why-do-people...om-torque-x-engine-speed-and-not-the-opposite

This one explains it best I have found. Squatch these guys you are arguing with are all about acceleration and top speed. Pulling a sleigh full of wood or smooth acceleration means very little to them. A Winder or a Apex are not about work they are about speed and acceleration. Let it go.

The biggest problem is that they argue torque is not important only hp. This is as flawed as the Sidewinder proves that torque at peak HP is the very reason that it makes the hp it does at 8800 rpm. Torque does not fall off like was said, it continues on for 3,000 rpm and shoves the hp through the roof. If you added 10pds more boost the torque would increase and shove it even higher. It also shows that torque does exist at or near peak hp. Its not a myth. Its the very design of our sleds. The Apex gets a boost in torque from a gear reduction pto. By boosting that torque at a much lower rpm, hp also gets a boost at that lower rpm.

Seems simple and accurate. The math supports it. Yet the vehemence that is launched is unbelievable!

I'll add I love the electric motor just because of its super car low 0-60mph times. Man that torque thing pulls!
