Rear cooler for 07 Attak

Allen Ulmer posted the following in another message:

Part Number: 8FT-21980-00-00
Description: 136" RX, RS Rear Heat Exchanger Protectors.
Price: $178.52

So apparently protectors are available from Yamaha now. Anyone seen or have pics of these?

I'm all ears..but at that price I'm plugging them up..

I might buy some tubing and fabricate them myself like the others did. They don' have to be fancy.

On the lake up here yesterday. 0*C or 35F. Blasting down the lake and lower warning light on pod for engine came on. I assume that it was for overheating as it shut off as I let off the throttle to head to shore to some snow.

What is the proper method to check coolant mixture? I thought you just used a antifreeze tester but after reading this thread I see it isn't.

Whats the deal with these rear coolers? Anyone got them in?

I put one in. Easy to do.. But I only paid around 100 from PortYamaha.

I don't understand why the prices have gone up so much..

I didn't try diluteing, waterwetter, etc. as some said that didn't do it for them until they put the cooler on. So I didn't want to spend the time and money. I went right for the throat so to speak. You should see the steam coming off that thing when rideing.

Maybe the protectors now come with the cooler but I doubt it.

I don't understand why you can't use an ordinary antifreeze tester(hydrometer). On my Attak, it measured minus 84 degrees and I diluted it to minus 45 Fahrenheit which is about a 55/45 mix. A reflectometer was mentioned earlier but I think what he is referring to, is a refractometer. Who's got one of those in their toolbox? Also from previous comments I have read over the past year, it sounds like Yamaha addressed the overheating problem with special pricing on the rear coolers, but that special consideration has now ended, it appears, and we are back to normal pricing. I have installed a cooler and it definitely makes a difference in more ways than one. Everytime I hear someone heading off the trail to drive through fresh snow for cooling, I remember the horror story where he ripped the bottom end off, on a stump. I also added a temp guage and last time out on a 32F day, easy riding, I was running at 170F. No worries.

Interesting post..thanks for the info.. I didn't know in my reading that this was special priceing..If it's true I feel lucky.

What mix does Yami want in our sleds? I can't seem to find it in the manual or service manual..I hate to cut it to -45 as we get those temps here sometimes for 2 weeks straight. So I left it at what came in my sled for now.

Yamaha had special pricing for awhile. I installed one in my 05 Warrior back when it was new and the large cooler for long tracks was $79 from Yamaha. I had 1" square aluminum tubing I used to fab some protectors, but even on hard bottoming the studs would still hit. Never enough to put a hole in the cooler but enough to rip through the fins. The problem is that on hard bottoming the lugs would hit the protectors but then flex over enough to allow the studs to hit.

Only my opinion, but I suspect that Yamaha sends the sled with high percentage antifreeze which covers their butt no matter where the sled is shipped. The individual preference is then up to the new owner who can mix according to location. I am in Northern Ontario and rarely do we exceed -40F. It would take quite a bit colder than -45F before antifreeze at -45F would even turn to slush. According to antifreeze manufacturers, 60/40 is good to approximately -62F. Gasoline is flammable only when it is warmer than -51F(-46C), and I haven't hit that day yet, when I couldn't start it.
Fan is said to kick in at 190-195F, temperature light at 210F.

Slow trail (35-50): 172-176*F
Medium (50-65): 180-186*F
Fast (65-90): 188-196*F at this point the side fan goes on then water temp. go down to 182 before going back up.
Very Fast (above 90): the highest I saw was 202*F.

At 213, the high temp. light up.

Good stuff thanks..I'll check mine and try to get it at 60/40 or -62deg. if it isn't there already..I didn't add much when I did my cooler..I caught most and then strained it and put it back then filled up the cooler and hoses before installing..I had to add only about 1/2 qt. total. I put in 50/50 then.
