looking for opinions on installing rear cooler on the 07 attak.
i have seen a few posts with pros & cons.
is there any problems installing the apex cooler (which is smaller) instead of the attak cooler ?
any suggestions on decent cooler protectors ?

There is a problem with installing the smaller cooler. Its not that it won't fit, its that it won't do anything for you. The little crosstube cooler for the short tracks is in a position where the snow spray off the end of the track will drive the snow up to the cooler. Your track is longer, so the snow spray is further back, which means you need your cooler to be further back as well.

Yes, I believe that it is mandatory. I've seen some pictures around of people putting 1" square aluminum tube over the heat exchanger.

Definately mandatory with picks to have protectors for the rear heat exchanger.
1 " tubing is the bare minimum. You will still likely tick the rear exchanger but not hole it with 1 " tubing for protection. I have scratched mine up with the 1 " tubing for protection running 1.325 Woody's Megabytes.
No holes though and 11,000 k on the sled.

Is the protectors only for the Attak. I have 192 1.450 in my Apex and was thinking about the rear cooler as well.

There are two coolers available... the one for 121" and the one for both 136 & 151".

No.
You are fine with the ones that come on the sled.

I'm one who put a cooler on my Attak. There seems to be 2 types now in the large size. I got one from Port Yamaha before Yami made them for the Attak with the grooves for the protectors and the price was around $100. Installing was easy.
Making protectors was a little harder. I used 1" sq. tube,1/8"x1 1/14 flat stock. Both bought from Home Depot. I made a sandwich with 1x in the middle and fabricated the strapping to bolt to protectors ahead of the cooler and at rear of sled. So I ended up with around 1 1/2in. protection which is what someone posted he needed for stud's as 1in. doesn't cut it.
The ripsaw lug's are soft so they give way and the studs protrude further then with other tracks.
There are pic's in old posts of the sandwich type protectors someone can do easily.

If you installed the new grooved type yamaha rear heatexchanger on the 136 apex would it be ok to just cutoff the last part of the stock protectors? (When not running studs).

I ran mine all winter with out studs and no protectors it was fine. But making them is easy enough.
