put 1200km on my new to me winder this past week, ran great. stock form the new 900turbo r doo's cant touch it on the lakes... how ever after a few long pulls i would get a burning smell from the right side of machine, pulled the side panel to see smoke coming from the insulation under the muffler, oil soaked from previous services, what are guys doing with this? just remove it? will the plastic belly pan melt? i read some guys use the metal tape for duct work... that stuff hold up? walk almost thinking about making a thin aluminum plate to fit in there but not sure if thats overkill,

thanks in advance

Oil soaked meaning it was saturated with oil from oil changes ? Not sure how that would happen when that is removed during service… I would advise not to run without proper heat guards .. If you add aluminum heat sheild you might want to wrap with foil tape..

Pretty common issue during oil changes that oil runs forward and saturates into insulation under muffler.
1. Prevent that in the first place by getting one of the available oil change accessory kits from a number of vendors. (https://precisionefi.com/en-us/collections/sidewinder/products/easy-oil-change-998).
2. I'd pull the muffler, remove that saturated insulation, clean plastic well with acetone, then cut to fit new heat insulation with adhesive backing. Make a cardboard pattern first. (https://thermotec.com/adhesive-backed-heat-barrier/).

Removal panel using rivnuts make it easier to do oil change. Remove panel and drain oil. No oil gets saturated in foam around exhaust this way.

Depends on how much clearance there is between muffler body and plastic. If muffler almost sits on plastic, it will melt. I've seen a couple. Need to put some spacers on the pegs to hold muffler up as much as possible.

This is the way to do it. On my 17 I used rivnuts, on my 23 I used the Honda style large plastic push pins, boy do I like the plastic push pins a bunch! Turns our they are much better than using rivnuts. I just drilled the hole the same size as the push pins. Holds great and quick on and off.

As for the oil soaked foam, rip it outta there leaving the fiberglass heat protection in place. Clean the oil off if it and call it day or put some foil tape down.

thanks for all the info guys its appreciated!
