You guys who have your machines can you describe the sound of the new triple? I currently have an '03 RX-1 and know what the 4 cyl sounds like. I'm curious to know what a similar machine, the RS, sounds like with only 3 pops coming out the tail pipes. Is the tonal quality that much different? Does it sound weird, flat, or not as satisfying? I'm hoping it still has a nice throaty sound as I'm considering buying one. How does it sound compared to the 4 cyl?

I like the way mine sounds.. It's mellow without being to quiet. When you blip the throttle it picks up revs fast. You will like the way it feels on the trail. Very light and the new skid is smoooooooooooooooooooth. The only thing you won't care for is a slight clutch rattle at idle.. All the rs sleds seem to have it.. I'm use to mine already.. It doesn't hurt anything. It's just that the three brings the noise out more than the four does. Enjoy the new toy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very nice sound coming out of those pipes.
Once you are up to speed you barely hear it.

I know this is kind of subjective but can you describe the difference in sound between the RX-1 and the RS? Does 3 pops really sound any different than 4? We have all heard what a 5 cyl Volvo sounds like compared to a 6. Sounds different like there is a cyl missing. Kind of flat sounding. Any similarities? Or does it sound the same as an RX-1 but with only 3 cyl's?

I have ridden both the 05 RX-1 and my Vector.
The Vector is noticeably quieter.

Thanks guys for your responses, but what I'm looking for is the QUALITY of the sound, not the db level or whether you like your new machine or not. Anyone have any input on this?

Mine sounds awesome, a little "throatier" than stock, as well as a little louder.
I personally like the exhaust note better on a stock vector than a stock RX1, it's whatever you like.

You won't be bummed about the way it sounds.. I like it better than the RX.. But if you are looking for a V-8 sound then it's not.. It has a sound all it's own. MM.

Not to beat this into the ground but I quess what I'm getting at is there a noticeable difference between the sound of a triple and the sound of the quad? 3 pops vs. 4 pops. Example: 5 cyl Volvo vs. a 6 cyl. You know, how it sounds a little flatter? Sort of off key? There is a discernible difference.
I quess from what you guys are saying is that they sound about the same. Not really any difference?

Just go to the Yamaha web-site! there you can hear both the RS and the RX! Nice sounds from both!!!

As much as I'd like, the websites just do not do justice to real sound quality. That why I was asking you guys who already have Vectors and can give actual, in the field, feedback.
Man! I thought this would be easy. I quess I just will have to go to a dealer and ask him to start it.
Thanks everyone.

My wife bought a new Vector and to tell you the truth, it doesn't sound much different at low and medium rpm. At a higher rpm, there's no substitute for the 4 cyl.
The Vector is a nice machine, but no chance powerwise compared to the RX1.

The RX1M (gutted muffler and ECP) has a Sore throat and a bit of a rasp (which I love) while the Vector Mt sounds a bit higher and more refined, more like a nicely tuned sports car. Love them both

Now we are getting somewhere. Thanks Trxster, that's what I was after. The tonal quality of the sound.

Just my $02
Yam 2 stroke single pipe tripples= Ferrari
RX1=Sport bike but muted
Vector= Subie WRX, Porsche 911
Funny since the 911 and WRX are horizontally opposed, but that is what my limited riding so far reminded me of.
