I just downloaded the service manual for the RX 1 Tks!
A snowmobile mechanic I met mentioned the steering column has to be disassembled to remove the cylinder cover.
As I look at the manual it doesn't mention about the steering column being worked on.
Does the steering have to come out to remove the cover?

looking at this picture, it looks like you might be able to sneak it out without pulling steering. never had to do it myself though.

Just happen to have the carb rack off my RX-1 so snap these pics for you. I'd have to concur with @maim and say you won't need to but may have to at least remove the fuel tank in case needing access to the backside.

Tks for the reply. I'm just confused how the " detailed" service manual could overlook steps when removing. One would think mention of other work would be required, this is an official Yamaha manual.Just happen to have the carb rack off my RX-1 so snap these pics for you. Doesn't get more official than this:
You have to realize that these service manuals are divided up in sections (ie. chapters). If wanting to disassemble the steering, refer to Chapter 3 - Chassis (more specifically, pages 96/97 of 333).

Based off this image, not even sure what removing the steering column will gain you as you will not be able to remove that horizontal aluminum cross-section that's welded in place:

Tks official yes but not as comprehensive as it should be. I'll search for a better reference, one that can actually assist with removing the cover.Doesn't get more official than this:

Some say it will come out without removing anything, others mention gas tank, steering column removal

If you're speaking about the valve cover, it can be removed easily with any steering interference issues.

Yes and no. No, it's not normal but yes, it was a common/known issue with the early 4-strokers like the 03/04 RX-1's. Some burned oil more than others and some hardly burned any so could just be that. I have since replaced my stock air box with a kit from back in the day that essentially entails K&N filters, larger jets, different CV slide springs, and an evac kit that vented the crank case hose going into the stock air box back into the two K&N filters (RIP Freddie).
