Hi,
On my 2005 RX-1, I have never had to add any oil between oil changes.
I have been our twice this season, once in about a foot and a half of snow in fields for about an hour and a half and the oil level was fine. Next I went on a 50 mile trail ride when our trails opened this week, the oil level was half-way between E and F and I didn't think much of it......BUT tonight when I checked the oil before I was going to ride the oil was at E.
I didn't go riding since I was conerned and since I didn't have my oil on hand yet (it is with UPS in transit).
In light of it seeming to use oil, I also realized that it also seemed to go through more gas than usual.
Does anyone happen to know if I have a problem and what I should check out?
Thank you for any help that you can give me.

The engine needs to be running for a while for the oil to expand from heat and to pump into the tank before you check the level.

I have the same problem. About 3/4 of the way through the season it stared using oil. About every two - three rides it would use more than 3/4 of a quart. Before that I would get a season without any problems at all. Since I live in Florida and the machines are up north, I brought it into my dealer and just called him about it - we go up in January - and he hasn't found anything yet. Does anybody have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

What LB said.............make sure motor is COMPLETELY warmed up before checking. ALso, on these things E stand for "Enough" ..........not "Empty"

There could be several reasons:
It could be that you checked them under different conditions, ie. cold versus warm engine.
Maybe the method you used to measure oil level was different, ie. dipstick screwed in versus screwed out (proper method).
Perhaps the sled wasn't level at a time you checked.
On your last oil change, did you replace the oil filter? Sometimes the gasket from the old oil filter doesn't come off and remains stuck to the engine and when you put a new filter on, it doesn't seal properly, thus creating a leak. Have a peak under your sled, any drips?
As far as using more gas, you mentioned running in a foot and a half feet of snow...this certainly can cause higher fuel mileage.

The engine was warm - in fact the oil light came on. The dealer changes the oil/oil filter. No drips under the machine, no oil in the pan and no blue smoke from the exhaust.
Again thanks for any info

how fast do you ride? ive been told that when the sled goes fast the engine sucks so much air that a bit of oil gets vacumed with it. check if your air box has a bit of oil in it.

How many miles on the sleds? Might be time for a ring-free treatment.

I usually ride between 30mph - 70 mph. Not really excessive speeds. In fact last year I traded my wife's Vector in = gave her my RX 1 and bought an Apex for myself. So the sled is really hers now. But this was happening before we "switched". The sled has about 5300 miles on it. I bought it new - maintained by my dealer. It really has not been abused.

Carbon build-up is the most likely cause of your oil usage. Combustion chamber cleaner, ring free, seafoam, etc. should clean it up. A search on this forum should fill you in on all the details.

i found the same thing in mine and disconnected the howse from the crankcase and installed a filter breather instead. now i have no more oil film on the inside of the airbox and mine doesn't use oil like it use to..........

Thanks for all the tips. I will not be up to Old Forge until Jan 15 - I will bring all the "remedies".

Mine started to use excessive oil once. I gave it a Ringfree "shock treatment." (Directions are on the can.) Then after 50 miles, I changed the oil. The oil was filthy (very black from all the carbon in the engine.) Now I run a bit of Ringfree all the time and do not experience this problem. When this excessive oil consumption starts, you can see the carbon buildup in the pipe tips. Run ringfree and the carbon buildup in the pipes is decreased significantly.
Also, if you just changed the oil, sometimes I have to go back later and top the thing off. Then it stays right at the top mark until the next oil change. The guys are right, ... the machine has to be hot and you read the level with the dipstick NOT screwed in.
