Rx1 idles high and backfires alot after maint.

Hi i have a stock 04 rx1 mtn with 2k km on it and i had it in for the carbs cleaned/set/synced/old fuel drained and got it back today and started it, it fired up no problem but would not idle at all without the choke half on, even warmed up for the first 10 min if you took off the choke it would die,once warmed up after 10 minutes it would idle between 3000-4000 and wouldnt come down with backfire and if i turned the idle down a shade it would just drop instantly to 1000 and die if you gave it any throttle,but if turned just a hair it would go back to reving,after 20 min of tryin to figure it out i took it for a lil drive and bliped the throttle and it just sits and revs and backfires.

any help or advice to pin point this would be helpful, or something i may be over looking.. thanks!

It the t.o.r that is comming on.When they put everyting back together they most of hook the trottle cable or installed it to tight.Make sure that the cable is not bent or hook on anyting.And if not readjust the trottle cable just loosen it and adj your idle from there.

If it was a tors issue he would not need to leave the choke on to idle a warmed up engine. Check the throttle cable to make sure it is free and smooth if it is smooth I doubt that is the problem. I would start by eliminating a few things such as take the top of the air box off and the air filter element. Look to make sure the carb boots have been put correctly on the carbs and that the clamps are on correctly as well. Make sure there is no arcing between the coils and the engine look in the dark to see this. Change the plugs just to make sure that is not the problem. Other than that the next thing would be to clean the pilot jets and what you are describing is classic plugged pilot jets.

thankyou for the replies, i did a little more digging with it and tried loosening the throttle cable and tunin the idle from there and same thing , at best i can get the machine to idle at 1000 rpm, but with lots of clutch rattle and backfiring, and itl hang between 2000-3000 rpm for 2-4 seconds then back to 1000 and if i even turn the idle up by an 1/8 at a time blippin the throttle to get it to idle at 1500 as soon as u touch the throttle it will just rev up to 4 grand. for some reason i just cant get it to come down to 1300-1500rpm, its either 1000 rpm or reving.
i tried disconnecting the 2 plug in wires plugging them into themselves and same thing it just revs erratic, if i disconnect them all together and touch the throttle itl just sit and pop.
boots are on good, doesnt appear to be vaccum leaks, im thinkin the carbs might have to come apart again, would improper syncing have anything to do with this or just improperly cleaned carbs? i didnt figure it was rocket science to make these 4 stroke engines run decent,lol

Take the carbs off yourself and clean the pilot jets they are the smaller ones and once out look like a cannon barrel. Clean all your other jets and your float bowls everything and it will run fine. Whoever did your carbs did not do a very good job. You should be able to see light through the jets. While your at it set all your air screws to two turns out from a light seat. When in doubt, clean the carbs . . . again, and when in doubt . . . clean the carbs.

Take it back to the shop that did the work. They shouldn't have sent it home like that.

**Update**

I finally had the time and built up the courage to tackle these carbs on this machine, the added snow gave me the extra itch as well,lol.
so after having it serviced at a reputable mechanic that would not look at it again without a full charge fee..*whatever,ill suck it up, its winter!!*
opened up all 4 carbs and found gunk galore!, syrup all over the carb bowl still,,, pilot jets? lol 2 mains were still plugged in the barrel and had syrupy stuff in them!, i spent a lil more effort on the pilots as that hole is fricken small!
anyways put it all together(not a bad process at all) crossed my fingers,hoped i didnt have to choke it till it fully warmed up,turned the key waitin for the bowls to fill up,,,, then it fired,started didnt have to choke it more than 10 seconds and it came to warming idle, then normal temp idle, took it for a ride and it was runnin like a champ * first time in a long time* but i noticed a slight hesitiate at low acceleration but i then found out after it ran to its temp it was idling a little high so i bumped it down to 1500 and it purrs, no hesitation...
from all this im saying thanks to everyone and all theyre inputs on this site, ive been studying this site for 2 yrs now and get most* meaning all,lol* my info from here, great site, absolutly love the 4 strokes! ill definatly be servicing my carbs myself from this lesson.. a second time, the rx1 hasnt ran this smooth for me since ive had it for 2 yrs!

PS Dont forget to tell that mechanic what you had to do get it to run right. I am wondering if the carbs were even done. This is another piece of mind doing it yourself. You know its done right when you do it yourself!
