I'm in the middle of going longer and got a question for you guys that have allready done it. Is removing the stock tunnel extension just a matter of drilling out the old rivets or do I have to pull all the rear plastics and the drop brackets? I only have instructions for the rail extensions and don't want to make more work than necissary. I allready have the skid removed.

Thanks, Jim

No need to remove the drop brackets to add a tunnel extension but you will need the seat, bumper, and all the rear plastic off.

Chance, Thanks for the reply  . I got a BOSS seat, so thats easy enough. Is the two plastic exhaust parts below the seat included in the platis that needs removed? I'm guessing from of the top my head that the two brackets for them are riveted about the same place as where the two tunnel pieces join. Am I right about that?

Thanks,

Jim

Hey Jim....I think I would pull them off just to have clear access for the rivet gun when installing the new extension. I don't know what extension you are going to use but most I've seen come with a pretty good instruction sheet.

;)!

Chance, It is a MPI 156-162 extension. It has real great instructions for the rail extensions but, there wasn't anything included for the new tunnel. I did remove the two plastic exhaust covers and also had to loosen up my 4 exhaust bolts so I could slide the new extension in.

All thats left now is; pulling the chaincase apart to remove the drive axle press on the extros and put the new track in. ;)! Oh and of course a good polishing with good ol' Mothers polish.

Thanks again,

Jim

Yep, billet drop brackets are on the list for next year along with a SC. I ran out of funds after the BOSS seat, track, extros, and extension kit along with a whole new belly pan on the wife's 900 RMK (she likes big trees :o| ).

Blgs,
I hope to do a 159 on my 03 rx1m in september. Could you please let me know what problems you encountered (if any)? I have been lurking here and think that i have read everything available; but, I am still leary. I am mostly worried about my ability to successfully tear into my reverse chaincase.

thx,
bdm

BDM, I was leery of the same thing when I longtracked my Viper. If you go to TY homepage and click on tech page you will find instructions on replacing your track. I also used an exploded view (parts schematic) from Yamaha's website to aid in reassembly. I was REAL good at it by the time I was done LOL! I forgot the first spacer for the driveshaft when reassembling. Got it all back together and added oil. OOPPS!! Had a puddle on the floor! After redoing it I have 4,00 trouble free miles on it. Take your time and doublecheck your work. Its really not a bad job.

i will be starting my light weight tvec mod in aug so i will post pic as i progress lots of light rx1 mod so i thought a tvec would be differnt. as for the dissmantle get a good mannual and a digital camera take lots of pics as you take apart then just reveiw the pics as you put it back together best tool for this. :yam: :4STroke: :4STroke:

Jim if you're going to all that trouble I'd be replacing the drop brackets at the same time. I have an MPI ext. and when I removed the rear stock ext. the entire ext. and drop brackets came out as one piece. Its the easiest way to install the MPI extension. Save a little more money and do it all at once.

Brian, I'm going with a 162 x 15 x2 camoplast challenger.

bdm, the process was fairly simple to do. Today I pulled the chain case apart and took the drive shaft out. I got all the drive assembly done; all thats left is adding the rail extensions, new hyfax, installing the skid, adjust the track, change engine oil, wash the sled, and polish the tunnel. As viper dave said the exploded view of the chaincase from the yamaha product orientation guide cd or from their web site. I had a problem with the allen screws holding the park brake assembly on. Strip one of the allen heads (they were practicaly welded in the chain case) so I had to use a hack saw to get it off. Going with a MPI weightless park brake that locks the brake lever like the other manufacturers.

Peter, Too late for the drop brackets :( . I allready installed the tunnel extension with the stock brackets. You must have done your extension swap diferently than me since you had the new drop brackets anyhow. I still had a couple of rivets and the front bolt holding my stock drop brackets in place. The stock tunnel extension just slid out from between the drop brackets and tunnel.

You'll like the MPI weightless parking brake. One less cable to clutter up the engine compartment and its faster to take the chaincase cover off now.
