Scag issues

I was riding this weekend and noticed that after the first day one of the studs (front) broke off the scag on the ski! This concerned me a bit, but I did keep riding. The second day I noticed that the other ski had the same issue. In both skis, the most forward stud broke off the skag. I am using Woody's 8" executive trail carbides. These had only 800 miles on them with plenty of wear left. Has anyone had this happen before? My only thought is that it could be caused by ski flex. Any other ideas??

Perhaps you had tightened them too much creating a crack in the bolt that snapped after time and vibration. I have never seen that happen. studdog. But, I have seen people snap them off by over tightening.

I have had this happen a number of times for different reasons. It is very easy to over tighten the nut causing exceeded stress on the stud. Other reasons include hitting shove ice on the lake at high speeds and or hard objects in the trail. Another would be a poor weld from the factory. Its really hard to ditermine exactly to true cause of failure but is not uncommon to happen. If you still have the stud they are easy to fix. Just tig weld back together and go.
;)!

I have had this happen more than once on my XT. But I can't remember if I was running Woody's.

One thing I always do before installing new carbides is remove all the nuts, and clean up the threads with a wire wheel. I've had studs break off due to paint dragging in the nut, before the nut had even bottomed out.

I have run woody's on my other sleds...never had a problem...was the carbide seated properly?..might not have been in the proper position when torqued...maybe a bad weld...did you check to see where it broke?

In each case the break was in the same location, just above the weld. I have a hard time explaining the issue being caused by excess torque in that it was the same stud that broke off in each issue. Further, there was no pre-break rust where the stud broke off, or a swirl in the break. It appeard that they just snapped off. I will weld a stud back on and continue to use them. I just hadn't seen this happen before and wondered if it was an issue with Woody's scags as opposed to other brand named scags, or just something that happened more frequently with the increased flex in the ski.

I use Woody's Products most of the time and have had no concerns let alone a broken stud. If it broke off just above the weld that usually indicates that it is brittle. Cooled to fast when welded. I would call Woody's and I bet they would warranty them. I am sure they would like to know about this issue. Just my 2c worth. :o| :4STroke:

Woodys uses 5/16" studs on the cardides they make for the Yamahas. The reason they use this size is because Yamaha has 5/16" holes in their skis. I have had the same problem on my Woody doolys last year and this year. Next time you want Woodys carbides, order them from Woodys and tell them you want them with3/8" studs and you will no longer break them off, but you will have to drill out your skis so the 3/8" studs will fit into the skis. On your old pair, if they are still in good shape, cut off the old studs and have someone weld on some 3/8' studs and you will be good to go.
