2017 Yamaha sidewinder ltx.
2017 winder 240 hurricane tune . Bunch of other goodies and 10,500 ish miles . Been in the garage since November fired up fine when I changed oil back in November . Went to fire it up today and got sd12 and tach reading 5506 rpm. My research is telling me I have a bad stator/crank sensor. I will do the appropriate diagnostic I wasn’t able to do tonight . Just wondering what any of you guys have to say ? Thanks in advance

I would make sure your battery is good first.
Common Causes & Solutions:
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS): The most common culprit; it tells the computer when to spark.
    • Fix: Often requires replacing the entire stator assembly as the sensor isn't usually sold separately.
  • Stator Coils: Failing coils can produce incorrect signals or voltages.
    • Fix: Test stator output (should produce AC voltage while cranking) and replace stator if readings are low.
  • Voltage Regulator: A bad regulator can also cause the SD12 code.
    • Fix: Test the regulator or replace it if other components check out.
  • Fuel Pump: In some cases, a lack of fuel due to a priming issue can manifest with this code.
    • Fix: Verify the fuel pump is priming correctly.
Troubleshooting Steps:
  1. Check Battery & Fuses: Ensure a strong battery and good fuses.
  2. Test Stator Output: Unplug the two-wire plug near the voltage regulator and check for 5-7V AC across the wires while cranking.
  3. Inspect Wires: Look for damaged wires leading to the stator cover.
  4. Check CPS Resistance: (For Arctic Cat models using same engine) Test CPS resistance (around 336-504 ohms).
  5. Listen for Fuel Pump: Make sure the fuel pump primes when the key is turned.
Key Takeaway: Don't ride if you have this code; it indicates a critical system failure that will leave you stranded. Replacing the stator/sensor assembly is a very common solution for this specific SD12 code on Sidewinders.

Battery is brand new but I will still check it out. Appreciate the reply will be tearing into it shortly . Will update with culprit/fix

Update it was the crank position sensor . Yamaha was back ordered till the end of the month and arctic cat was back ordered till may. Shout out to rmstator in Quebec I had a new stator with the crank sensor within a day . 30 day money back and a 2 year warranty. Likely about a 4 hour job worst part is the 1 turbo bolt on the backside of bracket that goes across subframe and scraping the ole gasket off.

Did you complete the new stator install yet? No starting issues now?

Yes starts and runs fine now. But was a little discouraged after install i turned key on engine off and the cluster was still showing the same code and engine rpm till I started it and all good now.

I have a spare RM stator in my " parts heaven" for the eventuality that my 2019s stator needs replacement. Good to know the RM stator works good.

That’s not a bad idea. I normally try to run oem parts for most things but that just wasn’t an option this time around.
