(Season 2008-09) TY Mileage – Yellowknife

Great report once again. Hope the gremlins leave you alone for a while. These 4-strokes should be just gas 'n go with the standard yearly maintenance stuff.

Watching your video with the new GYT-R's up front, I notice you said you've got the clickers set really soft. It's hard to tell for sure, but it kinda looks to me like you've got a ton of preload in those springs...just an observation. Not sure if you've got them cranked down that way on purpose or not.
I backed off the preload on mine so that when the front end is hoisted and unloaded, the springs are loose. Made quite a difference in easing the steering effort and also how well the front end soaks up the bumps. I'm all on trail riding though, so a little different deal.

Well, as i type this sentence, technically it is still Saturday, at least in my time zone, with only 10 minutes to spare.

I've spent a total of 35 hours and counting importing real time footage, screening multiple helmet camera files and viewing almost 300 photo's, over and over again. So many things to try to include without leaving anything significant out. So here it begins!

Sleding Weekend Number 13 & 14: Revelstoke, British Columbia!

Yellowknife,

Nice to meet you, my names Nick, I work at 440 Squadron here in Yellowknife as well. I'm a huge fan of the Nytro (however I dont own one), but I did pick up a 2008 Yamaha Phazer MTX at the end of the 08 season, and just recently rolled 1000km's on it.

I've been loving the powder this year, and I've seen your sled around a few times (the Phazer....very recognizable)...I've been trying to find a rack like you have forever, but was told that they're not in production, and that you were sent that one from Yamaha as a trial.
I gotta say man, I've been very entertained the last few days to read all of your posts, and have greatly enjoyed your pictures. (Haven't checked the video's yet..gotta do that at home).
I've got a bunch of friends here at the unit that are planning a trip to Berry Hill this Saturday 7 Mar 09. We'll be meeting up at Frame Lake just across from the tunnel to Co-Op Gas station at around 12:30. More than welcome to join if you like.

The biggest reason I'm writing you right now is to find out (if you dont mind sharing your info) who you rent and book through to go to Revelstoke. My friends here at the Unit are huge fans of Powder, and we're always watching video's and living in envy of others here at lunch times.

Love to hear from you, clearly I've got alot of reading to do to catch up to some of the topics on this site. And aside from my sled being shipped without the wiring harness for the hand grip heat.....and again as some people have stated, a very noticeable lack of heat output when operating...that's my only problem I've had with my sled.

Hope to hear from you soon.
Ciao!

Nick Donovan.

It looks like that to me too. I haven't touched them, they came that way, but I will play with them to see the difference. There's a lot of thread space on there. I will compare the manual specs for thread distance to what's on there now. Good observation.

Nick, nice to meet you. My real name is Allan.

The rack on my Phazer is from Royal Distributing. Yamaha wasn't offering anything in early 2007 so I measured the tunnel and ordered the rack you see on it. It isn't the lightest thing, but the way I have it bolted into the frame really helps the load concerns around bendng the tunnel. That being said, Yamaha now offers racks for the rear end of the Phazers. You can take your pic between the following that I have seen;

http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/accessories/ ... model=3151

That includes the exhaust turnout. Personally, I'd try this one, its less bulky, and if it were available when I got my sled, I would have ordered this one...in fact i'm tempted to order it now!

Have you seen this thread? http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=35456

I can't find the rack I have from Royal Distributing on the website. I don't know if they have discontinued it. It was originally for ZX ski-doo's. You can give them a call and see. It was $140 when I purchased it.

Thanks for the Saturday invite. I will be out at my camp this weekend, but I'm up for future invites for sure, especially if they are evening rides - i'm gone most weekends winter camping, etc. You are also welcome to come out with us. What's your email address? I usually send notes out to a few people are riding.

As for Revelstoke, we booked everything through Glacier House Resort. They have the all in one package, sleds, meals, a guide, etc. It's not cheap, but its a great introduction to mountain riding having everything taken care of like that. I've done the trip through them twice now.

Looking forward to a future ride,
Cheers,
YK

Allan,

Thanks muchly for the quick response. I'll check into the racks you suggested. I guess I was mis-informd.

Yeah, your sled is actually the reason I picked up the 08 Phazer. I saw it and I liked the color and the looks of it, and at the time the price was more right than the Nytro (which I wish I had now). I wish the Phazer had a tad more horsepower to help it get up and out of the hole a little easier. Seems to have just the right amount of power to spin the track deeper into the snow, unlike some of the Doo's that stand up straight and walk out.
Not saying I expect that of my sled, but it would be nice if it would atleast propel forward a little instead of down. :D

Yeah Revelstoke would be expensive I know, but I feel it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity, especially for my friends and I to do it as a group.

As for the wintercamping...I greatly appreciate the invite...My weekends are primarily booked up with my daughter though. Especially while Mommy's gone away to Basic Training. So the only times I can go sledding is once a weekend when I've got a babysitter.

We'll cross paths at some point I'm sure though, just keep your eyes open for another guy on a white MTX, and by all means, say "HI" if you see me. I'll do the same.

Email addy is nick@ykpaintball.net

Yeah...I own the paintball business in town here. It's great fun!

Just outdoors in the summer (well the nicer months....paint tends to freeze easily as I'm sure you are aware with the temps up here)

I started it last year because exactly as you said "no way, there's no paintball business up here?"... Well we play at the FOL Sandpits on the left hand side. It's pretty good stuff.

Anywhoo, I dont want to get in trouble for "hyjacking" this thread, so back to what's important.....POWDER DESTROYERS!

Allen, thanks for taking the time and writing up your great stories and mishaps. I find all your write ups fun to read as I am sure many others do to.
Good luck on keeping the sleds up and running for the weekends.

Where is YK hidding? R U ok? Anymore enjoyable stories for us? :bump:

Sleding Weekend Number 16; Saskatchewan & Manitoba

It was time to visit Mamasled and Papasled. The trip had been in the making since they moved away from Yellowknife, and a year and a half later it was time to get the tour of their new riding area.

I arrived in Regina on February 21st…
P1030890.jpg

On the 22nd we left Canora for Child’s Lake Lodge, loaded up with Fifi, Mama’s 550Fan, Fred the Tank, Mama’s TNT and that flat landers Summit 800 that Papa owned…
P1030893.jpg

We spent 2 nights there and got to ride around the clock.
P1030898.jpg

There was plenty of time for being goofballs…
P1030896.jpg

P1030897.jpg

Papa let me ride his sled for a bit, and I gave it back to him unharmed…and then this happened…
P1030899.jpg

A blown belt, but the video tells the tale…

We spent one day riding with fastfreddy and mr. heritage…
P1030901.jpg

And for lunch, Mama decided to start a new parking trend in town…
P1030904.jpg

The lodge had a couple of nice puppies…
P1030914.jpg

P1030917.jpg

And I got in trouble for feeding one of them.

We were having a blast, and Papa was busy showing me his nose goblins…
P1030920.jpg

I am going to take heck for these photo’s and video LOL

So for the ride back to Canora, Mama decided to lead the way for me while Papa drove home in the truck. That’s when I used Papa’s sled again…and noticed that it was broken!

Now, I didn’t break it…I swear…it was injured BEFORE I started riding it…

So Mama and I drove home anyway in whiteout conditions, and she was awesome, we didn’t get lost or turned around, I sure as heck had no idea where we were going, and we made it home safely. I couldn’t believe how Mama’s riding abilities have advanced since she lived in Yellowknife. She’s an awesome rider, and she left poor Papa in the dust on his Summit all weekend…Papa even crashed trying to keep up…but I figure, who wants to drive a Summit on groomed trails anyway?

So with a broken spindle, it was off to the dealer…and what’s this?
P1030921.jpg

It was time to work Papa into buying a new sled, ditching the Summit for a Renegade..but there was a slight motive here…I figured we could snag a test riding day out of the dealer on a new 1200 4-TEC DOO if Papa unloaded his wallet on a new Gade. I couldn’t have done it without 500ssman, who agreed Papa needed to upgrade for the trails in Canora – and Mama, well she was behind the deal from the start.

P1030922.jpg

After the sled purchase it was riding time again, and what’s this? 500ssman getting air on Fifi??
P1030928.jpg

And what about Frank the Tank? I have no idea who was riding him here…
P1030932.jpg

P1030933.jpg

Papa, 500ssman, and me, racking on the miles…
P1030936.jpg

Papa on his new gade
P1030941.jpg

500ssman riding Fifi to the bar
P1030946.jpg

Nothing but groomed trails
P1030952.jpg

It got me thinking of how it’s been 8 years since I’ve been on groomed trails, and oh how I miss them, until you end up behind people who you can walk faster than they are riding on the trail!
P1030954.jpg

The week went by with hundreds of miles of riding, loads of wildlife, and me yelling at the VIO helmet camera system yet again. Papa and 500ssman are witnesses to that unit not working for me. There were killer moments that could have been caught including Papa nearly colliding with a moose! VIO now has the camera and is testing it.

500ssman had to leave, so it was the last day of riding for me, mama and papa. We headed to a steakhouse and racked on an all time-high for me at 346.8 km’s in one day, smashing my old personal best in Yellowknife of 314.1 km’s in one day.
P1030960.jpg

And that was the end of the trip as I headed back to Yellowknife after an excellent week of riding! Mama and Papa treated me like royalty around the clock, I owe them a huge thanks for a great trip. The entire thing has me gunning to plan a trip for riding in Ontario and Quebec next January.

Now, the pictures don’t tell the whole story, and why give away the best parts when it’s all caught on tape? I’m not sure how many parts this will be by the time I’m done, but here’s the start of it. I’ll add notes to the next few video posts, one of which will be my experience on BRP’s 1200 4-TEC.

And as a side note, this was the part of the video I rode a 2009 Ski-doo REV XR 1200 4-TEC for a day.

Overall, the sled was decent but not enough of a winner to make me want to exchange my Yamaha for one. A lot of that has to do with years in the making in my opinion. BRP is new to the concept. I certainly didn't want an RX-1 at their outbreak either. Specific comments to the unit were;

I only got to put 140 miles on the Renegade I had. And I've never been able to ride a Nytro short track. I was swapping between a 500ss TNT, and an 800R Renegade though that day, and spent more miles on each of those the following days.

I guess I can't comment on the Nytro shorties for handling and performance, but I wasn't happy with the 1200 Renegade. It had really poor throttle response. For example; I could sit there and press the throttle to WOT and then let go, and there would be a second delay before the sled engine would even spool up. I would have my hands back off the bars without pressing the throttle anymore when the sled would start to move.

I do believe based on talking to other owners that my particular unit had a problem specific to this.

The throttle lever is so light to open, I was wondering what its even hooked up to? Just a TPS? Or is it also opening the butterfly valve(s)? There's no weight on the physical pull of the throttle lever what so ever. If I did that WOT with my Nytro and took my hands off the bars i'd fall off because the response is instant, as it should be with fuel injection.

When you talk about top speed or acceleration, I don't see an advantage that the 4-TEC has over my Nytro MTX. Its like the 4 TEC doesn't breathe enough. How many thorttle bodies does it have for intake? And what about its exhaust?

For handling, I felt the 4-TEC's weight and the sled was not well balanced. The back end is so light on this thing, just like an XP that the nose really dives in powder snow and comes down hard off any bumps or drifts. When using this sled in the trails with lots of turns, it pushed a lot and the front end weight didn't make a difference for those pilot ski's to bite. I think those ski's are junk the way they are. Maybe another carbide would make a huge difference, but I really don't like those ski's. I think something with more bite would benefit the weight of the front end of the 4-TEC.

I get that the Nytro shorty may have the same problem and that many don't like Yamaha's ski's either. I think skinny ski's suck. Again, choice of carbide makes a difference.

For top speed, I hit 159 km/h on the GPS or 99 MPH. It gets there pretty fast once the sled gets going.

The engine braking is very unpredictable. What is featured on these engine's to prevent it? I found it would coast to a stop only if I let off the throttle from a higher speed, vs. accelerating briefly from a stop and then letting off the throttle - the engine braking was heavy when doing this. The Nytro's isn't so harsh. The 4-TEC put my legs into the bars a couple times while standing cause of this. I really felt it when doing something simple like loading the sled onto a trailer.

How do your experiences compare, and do you think there's anything above that may have been specific to the unit I had? It had 700 miles on it when I got it.

I don't believe that the difference in top speed between two comparable 4 strokes like the Nytro and 4-TEC would be much would it? What numbers did your GPS show on the Nytro shorty?

As for the fuel economy - over the 140 miles I had the 4-TEC, the 500ss TNT and the 800R Renegade got better mileage than me. That could be break-in to be had yet after 700 miles? As for looks...I like both I guess, and I can't say on handling. I really gotta get on a shorty Nytro.

I'm not bias towards Yamaha - but I will recognise any products benefits and faults. I just didn't feel anything that I liked more on the 4 TEC over my Nytro MTX (as far as what's comparable) to make me wanna ditch my Nytro and get on the Doo, and so I think BRP can do better with this sled if they worked on the above stuff. 140 miles and one day doesn't make much of a review.

Part 3 of video to come...

Cheers,
YK
