On a new to me 08 Nytro, what is considered normal free rotational travel for the jackshaft. I can turn the secondary roughly 4" CW/CCW before track engagement. Bone stock sled. I don't recall there being that much "play" in my 98 SX (not entirely comparable). Seems to me as the chain might need adjustment? Any help is appreciated.

Does it have reverse? If so, this movement is at the outside of normal. Check your chain tension and try it again. I've had 6 Yamaha's with reverse and they all rotate the secondary quite a bit. It's the design of the dogs in the chaincase. Very strong, but not a precision device lol.
It does have reverse. I had a feeling with only 814mi, the factory settings are within tolerance still. if I recall correctly, I have to open the chain case to check tension?

Not sure on the Nytro, but it SHOULD be just like your SX. I'll have to do some research!!

YUP! It's on the chaincase,. Loosen the locknut, turn it in finger tight, then back out 1/4 turn. Googl yamaha has Nytro drive chain adjustment. Ulmer has a thread showing a track swap. There are pictures that show the tensioner bolt.
