Secondary washers

Ended up blowing apart my original stock belt this weekend. Secondary was stuck open from some of the cords. Luckily some other guys came by and gave me a hand wedging the new belt in the secondary to open it up just a little further. Put my spare on - different manufacture - which has a flat top side.
This belt sits way too low, and I'm only able to pull 10,000 RPM and hit 106mph on the speedo last night (I know I should be breaking it in a little easier). I think I cleaned everyting out of the clutch and cleaned up the scuffing on the sides.
Purchased another Dayco HPX for my new spare - which I think is the same as the stock - and will try it tonight to see if it rides higher (original belt did just fine).
If it doesn't sit high enough, then I will probably have to remove some of the washers from the secondary.
Question: does the secondary have to come totally apart or can this be done from the backside (washers #9 in the parts diagram) once removed form the jack shaft (I've had it apart before, but can't remember)?

I also remember a post a will back (can't find it) that someone was putting 3 washers in their secondary to achieve a higher top speed?
Anyone remember this and how?
Thanks

The secondary does not need to come apart. If you have good dexterity you could probably do it with the clutch still on the jackshaft, but is a simple job if you pull it off the jackshaft.

Run stock belts whenever possible. I have tried the Dayco and the suck as far as life. They will also lower your RPM's some due to them being of a softer compound.

to raise the belt in the secondary you add washers under the 3 bolts, as its the ends of the bolts that open the sheaves. the 3 washers you are thinking of for more top speed go under the helix on the three studs, allowing the secondary to open further.

I have to agree here. I have NEVER blown a yami belt. I do usually only go MAX 2000 miles on them but I have blown others in less than 1000 miles.
Go back to the stock belt!

Grader is right, you have to add washers to raise the belt in the sheaves. Yami sells 0.5mm and 1mm washers in sets of three.

shouldnt the belt on the yami's ride a smidgen above the edge of the sheve? And how much gain top end is there by adding the washers under the helix?

I have too agree! The stock belt is the way to go! I've tried the after market belts and none of them hold up like the stock Yamaha!

I have my secondary shimmed with 5/16 lock washers and it does give you more top end! I also have OSO primary spring, Green Holtzman carb springs and those special Spark Plugs and SLP anti- wear pads. With these additions I've seen 123 MPH on the DM.
This year I've added a Silver secondary spring, removed the tip weights on the primary, 4 TPI valves with 160 main jets. Going to Quebec on Jan 10-15 to check it out! 8)

Hey Bob,
"I have my secondary shimmed with 5/16 lock washers and it does give you more top end! I also have OSO primary spring"

So the 5/16 lock washers went on the studs under the helix like mentioned above? and sorry if this sounds stupid, but what is an OSO primary spring? I ordered the simmons air & clutch kit from Matt at the speedshop but I have been wondering what the OSO means. Seen it before on here.
Thanks

ahhh...that makes sense. Thanks. So I assume that spring is better for mid range on the RX?
Why didn't yamaha use it in the RX if they run that much better with it?

there setup is for general trail conditons. good acceleration and good top end. they leave alot on the table as for as clutching.
i'm also running the filters and theres a big gain in the midrange.

Yeah I can't wait to get the kit. Should have it tomorow!
