Seeking helmets with drop-down sun visors...

Holy crap. I just went to www.arcticchat.com and did a search on the Crosstec helmet. NOT ONE SINGLE POSITIVE REPORT. Everyone hates it, most returned it. Windy, foggy, cold, heavy, face shield randomly flying wide open at high speeds....all kinds of junk. AC sent everyone free upgrade kits that basically rebuild the entire helmet and replace every single seal. But the kits didn't come out till summer, so nobody knows yet if the upgrades actually fixed the helmet or not. And they're all over Ebay brand new for about $170...so that's gotta tell you something about how well these $320 helmets are selling...

That's way too many negative reports for me, even though they claim new upgrades for this year. Looks like I'm back to finding a 3XL Scorpion EXO 400...my last resort. If this doesn't fit me well I guess I'll keep my old one for one more year and rig up a safe way to carry my tinted shield on the sled...

c1c-

Not trying to promote one or another, but the reason I mentioned the Polaris helmet was I rode with a couple that had Polaris helmets and both had sun visors. They were not modular style helmets, looked like a standard HJC or Laser with no breath mask just a deflector. Actually didn't look like a bad helmet. Maybe they changed them for this year and now have a breath mask.....not sure; just know they did have a sun visor.

I have not seen anopther helmet with the BV2S sun shield. That Arctic Cat Helmet looks like it just has a visor, not the second shield.

I was at a dealer last year looking at a BV2S helemet and the Doo rep was there said they had more patents on the helmet than they do on their sleds and indicated the second shield that was a sun blocking shade was pateneted for at least another 10 years. I know he may not be the most knowledgeable about the patent situation, but it sure does look like something that is patentable...

we could be the 3xl helmet head gang. LOL I had a ski doo mod 3xl and it didn't fit, made me feel bad. Maxdlx

Well....if Ski-Doo has a 10 year patent on this feature, it's not working. The AC helmet definitely has both a visor AND a flip down tinted sun shield...if you go back to that link and read the features...# 4 states "Sun Shield: Retractible separate interior lens acts like sun glasses," feature # 5 then describes the removable sun visor. So it definitely has both, and the Arctic Chat people are complaining about distortion created by the tinted flip down lens. The Polaris modular also advertises this feature, and so does the Scorpion (the non Ski-Doo version, as well as the Ski-Doo version). So it appears that Yamaha is the only OEM that hasn't copied it yet, and with Scorpion it appears to be spreading into the non-OEMs as well...no official word yet on the HJC rumor of them offering it.

Was looking at the wrong helmet... Wonder if the rep was full of it or if they licensed the patent...

ski doosh hell-mate

I would really like to get into a ski do bv2s with a heated visor. but it's gonna cost a guy like $500. That's pretty crazy! I hope HJC comes out with one and Yamaha makes one available also. Does anyone that rides with a bv2s know if they ever have any problems with fog on the inside lens? I don't think they would have a problem, just currious. :rocks:

I have the BV2S. Yes it is expensive. $400! However, it is the best helmet I've ever tried. I kick myself for not buying it sooner. The mouth piece is not at all hard to use. When we stop I just pull out the liner and dab it dry. I have never fogged up. As for the money.....what's $400 when we all spent $8,000 - $10,000 on sleds? Just buy it!

I agree with RSRager 100%
Never fogged up in 2.5 years, I dont have the elec shield either comfortable warm and quiet. One that fits you right will be tight to get on then should be comfortable when wearing

A retro-fit shield would be well worth HJC, SHOEI, FULMER, etc... to look into. This would be a nice shift in the helmet industry, as well as better protection.

IMO: Patents or not, retractable sun-shades should be considered a safety feature, and made available on all full-face, snow helmets, and they should protect against UV as well.

Going back on the SNELL vs. DOT post: I like the better safety rating of the Z1R (allows less g's) but would rather have the sun shield of the Scorpion. The absence of such a feature could lead to the actual use of what the helmet is designed for.
