I am putting a new head on an i am have trouble setting the timing. I have all the marks lined up an the chain tight. I put the tentioner in an rotate the engine to make sure everything is ok. Then it will skip a link. I have had other people look at it an it just does int make sense.Iit is like the tentioner is not pushing hard enough on the chain to take out the slack. The only thing i can think of is that something is wrong with the tentioner. I fowled how the service manual says to put the tentioner in step by step. All the gears r stock on the cames.

I tie strap the chain to the gears once the timimg marks are aligned then I put a wrench on one of the two bolts on the exhaust cam gear and rotate it CCW so that there is no slack in the chain between the gears. With the exhaust cam being held in place I release the tensioner. Before rotating the engine put the valve cover back on. During rotation the exhaust cam comes off of a lobe to close a valve so it wants to rotate CW toward the intake cam but the intake cam doesn't rotate because it's opening a valve and the spring is resisting rotation. This results in slack between the gears which causes the chain to jump. The valve cover has a guide that will hold the chain to the gears preventing the chain from skipping on the intake gear. After making several rotations with the cover on remove it and recheck the timing marks. Never rotate these engines in the reverse direction.

Grizz other tip we have used is make a little jig that keeps pressure on the chain. This allows you to rotate and recheck without valve cover back on. Helpfull if playing with Cam timing....

I also hate the Auto adjusters and we used these http://yamahazone.biz/tensioners.html

It's not overly difficult to put the cover back on for rotation. I didn't know they made an aftermarket manual tensioner. I bookmarked the page

i put the cover back on an timing marks line up. the only thing is that the chain seems to make so nose. so i took the timing cover off an i can c the chain jiggle. i dont no if that is how it is or dose it do that tell the tentioner need oil to take the jiggle out. but when i do take the valvecover off the marks still line up?

are you sure the tensioner released and is pushing against the guide?

well that is what i am wondering is if i have a bad tentioner. or is it releacing. but when i take the tentioner out it is released. it dose seem like it is released. but doesnt seem like it is enough pressure. what can i look for to see if the tentioner is released.

If you're doubting it you may want to consider installing a new one but It's probably OK and yes it does need oil pressure. As long as the hook releases the plunger it should take up all the slack when there's oil pressure assisting it.

You need to put some pressure on the chain guide which pushes back on the tensioner and releases the small hook. I use a screw driver.

k i will give that a try
