Well we finally reopened the case on my 17 winder, and to our surprise not as much damage as i suspected. But the adjuster did have both screws backing out,the inner most screw was out about 1/4 inch, and outter one 1/8 of an inch, chain still in good shape,as was adjuster, but upper gear bushing was very worn and sloopy, installed new 22 tooth gear with predrilled holes, adjusted chain and closed up case. Everything else appeared in good shape,oh and yes we did weld the two screw heads, and reused everything except gear.

How many miles on the case/upper gear?

Hey Beast, just wondering if the one you replaced was the original 21T, or a 22T.

My original 21T was replaced at about 1400 miles if I remember correctly, and I had put a cheap $23 Cat gear with no oil holes. That one was replaced with same, along with a chain a couple of months ago. That 22T had around 5000-5500 and only had a couple of really small spots that were just staring to show color. Whereas that original 21T with not many miles on it was showing half of the bushing color.

So do larger gears last longer then their smaller counterparts?

Either way, those cases need to get split and inspected at least yearly, depending on how many miles one logs.

Nice catch on your tension roller screws!

Merry Christmas to you and yours, Pete!

The gears with no oil holes seem to last longer

A high percentage of stock gears rock side to side day one , hence why they don't last.

5000 miles and everything in my chaincase is still like new, zero issues!!

Hi dennis, sorry for just now getting back to you. I have been busy watching the Mr Olympia contest all weekend, not sure if you remember i am an old bodybuilder Mr Maine 94 so even now i am still interested in bodybuilding, and yes i still workout 4-6 days a week. But to your question on the case, and gears, yes it was my 22 no holes,my stock 21 only has nine miles on it,before i crashed the sled, and when we rebuilt it,the cat 22 went in,and that one did not have any predrilled holes, but does have 5000 plus on it,and it did need replacement, new gear 22 w/holes. Hey Dennis tell your wife the plant cutting she gave Marion is still alive and doing great. Well looks like Rain again this Christmas, man i can only remember a few Christmas,s in the past 20 years or so w/out rain! Well Merry Christmas to you and your wonderful wife too Dennis. Maybe by jan,3rd when we go back up to camp, things will be ok,and we can leave from Patten, and not have to trailer more north.

I installed a toughmet3 bushing in the 21T last year, 2000mi @ 240/270 and its still great. Original bushing lasted 1200mi = junk.
