While shimming, you may want to check to see how far out of line your top gear is with bottom gear. I've not shimmed so I don't know how much it takes. Good news is, on the 998s I've looked at, the top gear needs usually needs to be shimmed out more to be in line with bottom gear anyway. But, worth checking while you're at it.

Sounds a lot like my situation Sunday doing about same speed.
Dealer said it needed the shifting fork shoes and upper bearings amongst other items.

Is this on the older sleds or is this needed on the 19's & 20'sI put an aditional shim behind the upper sprocket to eliminate the huge axial play. A standard shim need to be skimmed down about 0.4mm to fit. Gives better engagement and 100% straight chain. Some people also change the bushing to a SKF version.
Also spotweld both bolts on the tentioner since its a common point of faliure.

My chain is straight as an arrow when shimmed. Seems like it is the natural position for the chain.

Turbo, how would you move it? It is stuck between two clips. I've just added the Yamaha .5mm washer behind the gear like others, but still leave the stock 1mm thrust washer on each side. While shimming, you may want to check to see how far out of line your top gear is with bottom gear. Can't move it much between the two snap rings. Thinner or thicker shims.Turbo, how would you move it? It is stuck between two clips. I've just added the Yamaha .5mm washer behind the gear like others, but still leave the stock 1mm thrust washer on each side.

I've always followed the procedure in the service manual for installing the servo... Never had an issue
