SingleShot rear suspension???

The most positive review of the Slingshot that I have seen is that it is nearly as good as the mono, I think that was from CR. Lets hope Yamaha does not build us an awesome new motor and chassis and use this suspension. Seems like that would be financially the thing to do, Why did they build the slingshot in the 1st place?

Thats what I'm getting at. I hope to god they don't build us a cross plane lighter beast of Apex replacement with the SS suspension which nobody likes. Yamaha has a bad history with shock calibrations.

I'll be curious if the Apex even exists next year.
I would think yes if nothing replaces Apex in 2017. Not selling many anymore & without a comfy ride I would not be interested I would be calling FAST for a new suspension SS is a brick. Just have to see if Yamaha turns the page with a new platform if not I'll be talking to FAST if I stay on with used Apex in near future.....new no way not with SS. Snow trackers on stock single keel skis do really well for front end handling so now I would look to aftermarket for cush rear skid.

Is the skid the problem or shock calibration? The best skid in the world sucks if the shocks arn't matched to it. I do agree that the float may not be the best option here but what are you going to replace it with? A coil over?

the shock calibration is pathetic... but even with a good shock, it isn't easy to get good performance out of this suspension.. and adding 5 pounds with another shock then the Fox means you loose a lot of the weight advantage of the singleshot... but at this point who cares if the suspension weighs less..it handles like crap.

Maybe single shot refers to the fact that they are only going to use this suspension one year, hopefully.

Kinda odd that nothing has been mentioned about how horriable this is till now tho. Would think it would be out an public knowledge by now

I think with the crappy snow year, guys are just getting some miles on them. Sounds like crappy ones at that...

i posted in December how i was disapointed, but i was the only one that had tried it.. and it took another few rides to compare with the monoshock and the singleshot with aftermarket shock.. and the conclusion still was the same.. for me, singleshot meant single ride..then get rid of it...:whine:

That did it right there for my thoughts after I just rode it and Mr. Mileage Nick K. tells me he doesn't like it. At first I thought maybe it needed adjustments but NK can't get it remotely close to his old skid's ride. I agree, what did the magazine editors ride? Not the first time we have heard a prototype was better than the real thing.

Well, if the SS really is that bad, then what did the editors of all of the snomo rags ride last spring, when they all praised the ride and handling of the new skid?

How mnay times have you seen the rags post something really negative about anything? They need the advertising $$$ to survive.

EDIT - the rags raved about the Pro Active/Pro Action (??) skid on the 2005 Vector. I bought into the raves hook, line and sinker. It's now known now as the "Pro No Action" skid....for good reason.

I am very disappointed to read these reviews on the SS skid....I can't understand why Yamaha can not...or is un willing to learn how to calibrate a suspension properly....they have had lousy skids for 20 plus years...While the mono could be a nice plush skid...it sucked in rough conditions, and my xtx rides decent through the rough..it will kick your #*$&@ in the stutters....there's no happy medium. This SS sounds like my 02 Viper all over again. Such a shame that a company that build's such quality machines, with awesome engines..can't calibrate a suspension...it's embarrassing quite frankly. Even the vipers don't ride as nice as their cat counter parts (too stiff). I knew when I saw fox shocks it would suck...I HATE AIR SHOCKS, and especially FOX...JUNK...Yamaha needs to kiss and make up with ohlin, and let them calibrate the shocks, and springs in their skids and front suspension...because it's obvious...Yamaha can not.

I have been thinking what I would like in the future...I think I will just keep my xtx, and slap an after market skid in her. (probably an ez ride)
Might add dual tuners...and when it needs a new track probably an ice cobra....ulmer clutching (with machined sheeves, and air box mod)...then just ride her till the wheels fall off...these sleds are getting stupid priced...too stupid to pay $15,000 to buy something that rides like crap!!!

I often thought that Yamaha should just farm out their skid calibration and fine tuning to Hygear. Hygear would take the basic skid design that Yamaha has proposed and would make the necessary calibration and geometrical tweaks to the skid before it is put into production. In return, Yamaha USA manuals might state "Yamaha recommends Hygear for servicing the shock absorbers." or something like that. Hygear gets a lot of new business from rebuilds / revalves and Yamaha gets a nicely calibrated suspension that people are happy with. The rails could even have printed on them "Suspension By Hygear" as a sort of advertisement for their design services. How cool would that be?

It seems to me that the partnership with AC should provide what Yamaha needs to build a competitive suspension. The obsession with air shocks needs to be overcome (they have their place but trail riding may not be it)but in general AC has a pretty good handle on suspension design and calibration.
