How is the skid plate for rx rs model installed, I know the front is held on by two screws, but It looks like the back is held on by rivets... Is this going to be a pain in the #*$&@ to put on?

The back plate panel is also held together with screws with a crushing aluminum washer affair. You will need to drill some larger holes. In my case I had to drill the skid plate holes also just a bit larger to make the plate allign correctly. Realtively an easy job. Leave the screws loose until you get the front screwed in. Yamaha updated the Aluminum washer affair to brass but it requires a special tool to crush them. I have had no problems with the aluminum ones. The skid plate is a very important addition . If you hit a rock or someother object, you will push the back part of the access hole along with the cooler into the track and with studs, you will be walking home.

Do you think you could post some pictures of the back of the Skid I don't really understand what your talking about because when I look underneath my rs nytro all I see is rivets..... and you mean before or after I add the skid I can punch the cooler?

You will need to drill out 4 rivets and make the holes larger. The instructions will show you where. If you don't install the skid, you could punch the cooler. It,s really quite easy to install. Just take your time doing it.

Guessing I am going to have to buy a mounting kit then..

Forgot to ask Vectornut.... what replaces the rivets? Do I put new ones in or does the mounting kit give you screws? I am buying the skid used off a friend so I don't really have intstructions. Because I know I will have to take the skid plate off to change the oil this summer.

The skid plate will come with it's own mounting kit. It is pretty easy to do just like Vectornut said. Some of us have used longer rivnuts with success. Here is the part number from McMaster Carr. These are for aluminum ones. You will also need a 10mm or 25/64" bit.

Nope.
With the mounting kit you just have to unscrew the fasteners. That is what the rivnuts allow you to do. You replace the rivets with rivnuts and use the supplied bolts to attach and re-attach the skid plate.

I wouldn't screw with the rivnuts. I drilled 29/64" holes and used wellnuts instead. Saved a big amount of time. To me, the rivnuts are a joke! Wellnuts just slide into place firmly. Didn't have to modify the holes in the skid plate at all! Works awesome!

What sized wellnuts should I look for? Thats a good idea too!

I took my drill bit to the hardware store with me to find the size. Can't remember off hand the size. Little bigger than 29/64ths I know that. I had to shave a little rubber off of each wellnut to get inserted firmly.

And you just drill out the stock rivets and replace them with the well nuts? Intresting. I think I will try it.

Yes. But be careful! Don't let the drill bit go too far in or you will have problems!
