how many are having the snow build up issues with a skid plate? what have you done and what was your success in aiding the build up before it either pulls out the rivnuts on the bulkhead area, or pulls out the bolts going through the plate and front nose cone out of the front cone?

my idea is (yamaha if you are listening) to either make a one pieced updated nosecone and lower cover for the sled like the other A armed yamahas, so you are covering the lower panel with the skid plate. this leaves no way snow can get between the plate and the panel causing the above failures.

or

make a two piece skid plate, one for the nose cone with a slight extension toward the arms, and one for the lower cover bulkhead area fastening with rivnuts and the front in a wrap around manor.

i have been cleaning my plate off best possible every day, to relieve snow pressure from the plate. but i still had a front nose cone bolts on the plate rip out through the panel. i am still happy with my sled this is just one of those little things that could be improved on to make the sled overall better fore everone, short and longtrack riders. i have multiple pics of the failure including tape measure with snow/ice build up for one day of offtrail riding, leading to the failure if anyone is interested. ski

I know what you are thinking about when you are suggesting a two piece guard.

I have had mine pull off as a result of the expansion caused by the melted snow turning to ice.

I am considering running a bead of low expansion foam behind the A arms where the skid plate comes in contact with the belly pan. I don't know if this will help, or anyone that has tried it.

I've never had any issues yet. Lucky me, but I can see how it could cause problems.

I wonder if the new skid plate/flotation plate is better. I saw one in person at the show. Its a much larger piece and much wider, but appears to mount the same way as the old plate did.

the float plate from skinz will hold more snow i am guessing. putting holes in them to vent the snow will only let it ingest more as well. sounds good in theory as it will let the snow out, but those holes will act as scoops and let more in as well. the two piece plate sounds like a better option to me. but that is just me. ski

This is the new Yamaha plate I was referring to. Here is the sled talk blog post about that plate: http://snowmobiles.yamahablogs.ca/2007/ ... tro-stuff/

But it is one piece as well.

looks like a giant snow shovel to hold more snow. sorry if people like it but, i would never put that on my sled. LOL! i'll be cutting my skid plate for a two piece skid plate. unless someone comes out with a better more appealing skid plate. ski

I agree that it could/might get more snow between it and the "stock" plate, but I think its meant more to help flotation. I might get one to give it a try.

I run a skinz plate. Yeah, it's a shovel, no doubt. But flotation is key and it's made a world of difference. Never get that nosedive that I used to, uphill I'm always coasting skis out, and downhill pow is insane now. Feels like I got 1049cc's strapped to my snowboard.

The worst was blowing the stock front brackets all the time. I've tried several different routes, but ended up finally with a dual ubolt that works killer. The only time it really really shovels bad is when snow is super heavy and wet and I decide to start dropping cornices head first. :drink:

I'lll try to remeber to post some pics of it up later.

Couple pics of my skinz plate and the Double U-Bolt mount I run to solve the stock clip snapping issue:

Now I just need to fix my Custom cover so the A-arm straps can connect.
