So this weekend I had my first Yamaha sled ever make a trip end early for me. I was going across a lake after riding trails all day and then...game over. While going across the lake I just lost all power to the track but the motor was running fine and so I looked to see if I had blown a belt and discovered that was all fine and dandy which sucked royally!!

My question is what do you guys think it is as I havent had time to even look at it thoroughly yet. I think I know what it is but just want to see if Im on the same page. No codes on dash by the way and the clutch engages and motor spins right up. Bearings? Chaincase?

did it make any crazy noises?

I would think if you hurt something in the chaincase you would know it.

My guess - just a guess is driveshaft failure.

if you SMELL or SEE gear oil_thats a sign! :drink:

Yea.....no loud noises when it actually happened. However, smelled a little burning throughout the day and was only 30 miles from being back home so said the hell with it I will look at it when I get back and didnt make it obviously.

I also noticed the track start ratcheting late in the day so I knew something was up but was hoping I could make it home. Going to rip it apart right now so I can have it fixed and ready for the weekend.

Just never had a problem on any sled Ive owned with this so was seeing if this is common on these damn sleds.

Yea....just got back from taking the chaincase side crap off so I could get a look inside. Chain snapped. Funny think is it didnt make any loud noise or anything like that when it happened like one would think. Glad I took a look though.

The intriguing part is the fact that there was virtually no chaincase oil inside of it. Looked at chaincase assembly and it looked like it was fine and sealed up tight. Where the hell did it all go?

You're fortunate that the blown chain didn't take out the entire chaincase with it. In retrospect, I'm sure that you realize that the "burning" smell you mentioned experiencing was actually the smell of gear oil. The seal was probably twisted at some spot, preventing it from sealing correctly. A new seal is definitely in order. Along with the chain and main gasket/seal, you should also inspect and/or replace all the bearings and shaft seals

Thanks for the advice LB....I will check out all bearings and seals. Ive never had this problem in the past so dont know much about the causes of the chain failure.lm sure the loss of gear oil had something to do with it, but would anything else cause a chain to fail? I know this is a longshot but I just recently put 144 studs on and would that even have anything to do with this or anything else that would?

the gear oil had to go somewhere if it had some in it. chances are the bearing are not in good shape anymore as well. i would be changing them. if it got hot enough from lack of lube to break the chain, you can bet it heated the bearings and seals up as well. imo.

This exact thing happend to a friend of mine twice last year on his attak. The oil was leaking out the seal on the jack shaft under the tunnel while he was riding. The first time it happend the dealer accused him of not enough oil but they still fixed it under warranty. The next time happend 2 days after they fixed it. Thats when they dug into it further and found the seal bad on the tunnel side. I check my oil before every ride now.

Lost all my chain oil too; caught it before the chain broke, just fried it. :-o
