Can I take the slides off a 2006 Venture RS by the track windows or is it a big job to remouve the skid?

Through the back windows.
Take the screw out of the front and try to get enough slide through the window. Clamp on to the slide tight with a pair of vise grips.
Then pull the slide out.
Use a rubber hammer to tap the new slides back into place.

Very easy to remove the skid and you can grease it up easier this way too:
Jack up rear of sled in the air
Loosen rear axle bolts
Loosen track tension
Remove 4 bolts holding suspension to tunnel
Pull out skid
If need be, you could loosen the torsion springs to make it easier to pull suspension out.
