Ran some hardpack yesterday, sled got hot, track melted the sliders, and stuck to them. I thought I had them free, but when I went to go, one slider ripped right off the machine. Stupid, and I know better!
So, do I have to pull the skid to change that one slider, or can I do it from a lift? It also ripped the screw out that holds the slider on the rail, so I will have to either tap that out, or make a new one.
Also interested in any tips or tricks you may know to make this easier. I plan to do it tomorrow.
Is this a common problem?
Thanks!!!

I always do it in the sled, unless I'm taking the suspension out for other work.
Just tip the sled up partially on its side. Use a good support under the handlebar end to hold it.
Run a tap through that hole.
Take a file or a die grinder to rough the sharp edges at the back of the rail where the slider slides on. Use some soap or something slippery to aid in sliding it on.
Put a little loctite on the bolt.

You should be able to install new sliders through drive tooth holes from the rear, just get the track off ground. You can also access that broken screw from the drive tooth holes.
If you're struggling, you can loosen the bolts adjusting the rear wheels, this will loosen the track.
It is a common problem on every sled. You just gotta find some fresh snow to cool the slides every now and then. Make sure to use ice scratchers on hard pack, it really helps.

Thanks, and yes, If I wasn't so stubborn I would have taken my fan cooled venture with scratchers on it. It was a bit of a test for the VK and it failed LOL ......What scratchers does every one use? I have the cable style on my venture and they work great for that sled, but its fan cooled, so I don't need much snow. I really thought the VK would have been ok, but i guess that wide track floats so much that it is hard to get down in the snow. My friends on normal track sleds were fine. No damage, just my pride LOL

I recommend BRP or cable style, since they're reversible. But any scratcher is better than nothing!

only time i do the slides with the skid out is when i am changing a track. usually use penetrating oil to get them on easyer. if the hole is too messed up on the tip of the rail, i tend to drill through and use a 1/4" counter sunk screw with a lock nut on the top of the rail.

Well, I pulled the whole skid out, and still couldn't get that screw out. Tried everything from welding a bolt to it, to drilling it. Nothing worked. I ended up drilling and tapping a new hole. Got the skid all looked over and greased up again anyways, and installed scratchers so this doesn't happen again. Took it for a rip yesterday on basically glare ice and it was no problem with the scratchers. I'm a fan cooled guy, not used to these liquid cooled 4 strokes yet, but I will figure them out.
