Sobfrogg's 03 RX1 Project NEW WORK 12-05-10 page 5

Well I guess it is time to drag this out of the dusty corner.

Time for some upgrades. I really was not happy with the proAction rear skid. Setting it back and streching it did help but it still really liked to trench. And the dam thing weighs a ton!!!!!!
Once I got the sled on a hard packed trail the sled was rather squirly. Mostly due to the fron suspension. I found some stuff worked loose. tightened it up. A little better. I got on the phone with TimberSled and found out they came out with a reworked front spindle. I was told that would take care of the squirlyness in the front end.

Hmmm I still have this TimberSled rear skid in a box.......... Thank to Cody at Snowy Range tours I now have rails. 151 rails :)

So this fall. A new track to go with this new suspension. New Front spindles. Some venting for the clutches. A rollover control. More gearing changes. Oh time to play with the clutching a bit more.

Time to get busy :)

More pics sobfrog .-)

Well time has been short and things are going rather slow. I did manage to get some pics of the vent install on the side panels.
The vents come from 2CoolVents
Befor I started
021.jpg

All the wholes drilled and the raised area had to be cut out

A close up of the finished install

And here is one of the covers back on the sled

Really the project taking the time is getting the Timbersled skid installed.
First thing was to remove the old skid and the mods the were done to set the skid back.
Thanks to Allen at Timbersled he gave me some pointers on where to start my skid install. Basically its like starting with a blank tunnel.
The rails came from Cody at SnowRangeTours. Great guy THANKS Cody. The rails are off an 05 RX1M. 151" rails that are tipped up.
So I figured with the rails being bare this was a great time to polish them :)
Starting with 800 grit wetpaper then 1200 grit and finishing with 2000. wetting with a mild soap and water solution and a spray bottle.
With all the new holes drilled for the new suspension arms it was time
What I started with.
025.jpg

Done witht the 800
029.jpg

done with the 1200
033.jpg

done with the 2000. the light scratches will be removed on the buffing wheel.
036-1.jpg

043-1.jpg

the wet sanding took anout 3 hours per rail. That includes sanding the top of the rails and inside the small windows.
After another 3 hours with the buffer here is what I ened up with
076-1.jpg

Got the suspension all put together. I must say it will be a crime to get this dirty
094.jpg

093.jpg

So for the polishing part that added another 12 hours to the project. BUT DAMMMMMMMMMM
Time to start getting the sled mocked up with the suspension. So in goes the new track along with the drive axle and new speedo side bearing

The hardest part is getting the forward rake set correctly. Best preformance for me would be 3 to 4 degs of forward rake. Any more and there is to much weight on the front end. Not enough and well you can guess.
Next is getting the front pivot arm mounts installed, and then the rear drop brackets.

That's the shiniest pair of rails I've ever seen, cool :)

Alright the rear skid is INNNNNNNN
I ended up moving the front founts back 10" and down slightly. the rear mount is 29-5/8" back from the front mount.
Mounting the rear drop bracket required removing the snow eliminators and drilling more rivits. Dammm I am getting good at that.
so here is how things ended up
You can see the old front mount then the mount from when I relocated the old proaction. With the new mount the furthest back
013.jpg

The new location for the drop brackets is about 6" back
poor tunnel is starting look like swiss cheese
014.jpg

kinda ugly with the snow elimators removed.
011.jpg

the new aproach angle looks good.
016.jpg

ITS INNNN
005.jpg

And the rake looks perfect :) 3 deg
012.jpg

OH also took a few minutes to clean up the tunnel
022-1.jpg

And the new suspension mounted, even added some timbersled bling
019-1.jpg

With the skid in. Now to start on the exhaust. I was not happy with the old exhaust mount. The cast part that the old muffler in cracked on one side and broke on the other. Alos want to get the muffler up a little higher. I had some lugs get torn from it last season,
Roll over control still needs to be finished up.
And a few other things

Looks great!

What is 'rake' angle that your measuring? Did you measure the approach angle? It looks steep to me from the pict, I dont know jack about that stuff though I just see all the MTX sleds with set back skids the track doesn't even touch till it hits the curve.

My tunnel is swiss cheese to so I made the side plates to cover it all up.

Thanks guys.

Kinger, the rake I am refering to is the front to rear rake. Not sure how else to explain it. Basically with the rear sitting slightly higher than the front of the sled. To much rake or having the rear to high will put to much weight on the front of the sled and make for poor handling.

The picture of the aproach angle is a little missleading. With my angle finder on the track it is at 17deg. The pic does not show it that well. The old set up I had had the angle at 21deg.

Ryan, that is what I have been thinking of.

OH Kinger. I like the side plate. VERY NICE.. I am not to worried about the swiss cheese. She might get a new tunnel next year :)
