Hi guys need some info 1986 srv 540 replaced everything in the chaincase and when everything was put back together I noticed the lower gear could still be moved in and out on the spline I looked on yamaha parts breakdown and there's a collar behind the upper gear and a washer behind the lower gear I put the new bearings in until they bottomed out thought that was normal but said and done wondering if its normal for the lower gear to move in and out on the spline with the bolt tight

You might get more response from this on our other site Totallyamaha.net forums. If I remember correctly, that gear should not float.

No you don't want that because the gear will move back and fourth when your driving and the chain or gear could blow up. I snapped to head to my bottom gear and it move back and fourth on the shaft a bit and it didn't end to well. Broke the chain and mess the gear up pretty good too.

I spoke to two yamaha dealers and they told me it's suposed to float on the shaft for proper alignment and low wear but I checked everything with a parts breakdown and it's all correct but I'm still leary as well ?

O maybe its a little different for an older sled like that. I guess I had a 2006 Polaris when i busted mine up. When i put a new one together I had zero movement and drove it for maybe another 1000 miles before buying my nytro. I guess if the dealer says its ok then I would go with that plus thats coming from 2 dealers not just one so i would go with what they said.
