Started my sled Friday morning to let it warm up while I unloaded my girlfriends sled. It ended up stalling so I cranked it over again but if steamed to bind up a few times. Turned key off and tried again but all I got was a nasty noise. Reading on here I knew what happened. I called gregoires in joliette to see if they could look at it as we were up there for the weekend. We are from plattsburgh ny. They tore it apart and found the starter gear was missing two or three teeth in five different spots and it scored the stator for good measure. Parts are 1900 and labor is 10 to 12 hours at 90 per hour. Good thing it is still under warranty. We have one or two weekends left to ride and it will be ready on Thursday. The sled has 11000 miles on her.

Oh man that is kinda scary. With that many mi would think you would have gotten a good one. Lets hope Yamaha covers these even after our warranty is done as they are now and into the future. I and many others keep our Yamahas forever. Would be sad to have a starter/gear failure be the nail in coffin even ten years from now. Guess we may find out someday.

I will let you know about the warranty. I did buy the fourth year so it should be covered. The thing with Canada is you have to pay out of pocket then get reimbursed from Yamaha.

Wow that would stink. Feel sorry for you Canadians. Pretty confident they will cover it have not heard of any they didnt. Sorry it happened to you though.

Same here 800 miles my 2d starter just went can't take it to dealer no roads 4 hr snowmobile. Ride sucks

No they don't ... Pull muffler off and you can get to the stator .... Pull the oil filter access panel access panel off and go though there to get starter out ... I've done a lot of them that way and have done them in less than 3 hours ....

How do u make sure all the metal pieces r out of the motor.

Hard for them to get to the bottom ... Usually they are stuck to the fly wheel ... Most is the time it takes out testator as well ... But the fly wheel is a magnet so they stick to it ....

It did take out the stator. All the pieces they found didn't add up to the pieces that came off the gear.

Just got off the phone with the repair shop and thy said they are going to pull the motor and take off the base to make sure all is clean.

Seems strange to me you have to pay out of pocket. Maybe some shenanigans at play here. I know when mine went in for starter, stator and ring gear. I was into my ypp already. I signed the invoice and that was that. My dealer is in Delhi Ontario.
As far as I'm aware the only things you need to pay upfront is the trip insurance parts (lodgings hauling the dead sled out of the bush) yamaha will reimburse up to their maximum in the plan.

The dealer is doing the correct repair.
Anyone can guess and say its going to be ok when doing a repair in the backyard.
The dealer has to stand behind whatever workthey do.
If they dont pull the motor and one of those broken pieces takes out the motor after the repair its on the dealer.
If it was my sled and was a warranty claim, i would demand that they pull the motor and clean everything properly
