starter gear

my uncles 1992 big bear is havin a starter problem. he has changed the starter and we can hear it spinning. bike still charges but will not start unless you pull the bugger over by hand. its huntin saeson here and this is gonna start hurtin soon when we have to crank that sucker over at -5c. any one have a good parts break down/diagnosis on this area of the bike?

Sounds like a starter clutch problem. Between the starter and the crankshaft is a one-way clutch. If you can here the starter spinning freely but not turning over the motor check into that one-way clutch. Sometimes there is a couple of idler gears between the starter and the clutch. Check those also. As far as seeing a parts break down go to www.portyamaha.com and click on Yamaha fiche in the left column. From there you should be able to enter the machine and view the parts microfiche for that machine. Look under starter clutch and it will show the breakdown of that area.

ok got the cover off the sucker. planetary gear/intermediate is spinning ang gear on motor is spinning but no crankshaft movement . now my question is how the am i supposed to get those allen heads out? am i supposed to pull the flywheel 1st? do i need the puller for it? :?

ok i solved it. the sprag was still good but changed it any ways while i had it apart. turned out that the starter was spinning wrong direction. had to change it cause armature was smoking when i took it apart to try and reverse rotation. live and learn i guess.
