Starter went out on the trail on my 07...

I just wish the wife would have held the camera straight when she took the video. I guess she thought we could easily turn the video like we do pictures when you take them on an angle. Oh well.

The rope trick works great on a warm engine but not so much on a cold engine. I did it on the trail with warm engine no problem. Then next morning tried it for 45minutes and finally gave up. (rode backup sled instead.)FYI

I was kinda thinking that would be the case. Still it's not a bad idea to have the equipment with ya.

I can get it to star 3rd time every time cold or worm. I did this when I hot wirerd my sled. It works better if you pul from the front.

Any tips on how to get to the starter to fix?

Thats what I went by^^^. The green line on the center of my starter was not lined up with the notches on the end caps due to the bolts coming loose allowing the starter to twist. I lined everything back up and red loc-tited the bolts and reinstalled. It worked, but due to the design and mounting of the starter, I don't think its the last time its going to happen #$%&*

I know what you mean...if it was designed to have one bolt to hold the rear of the starter to the engine, everything would be fine.

I never found out what Yamaha was doing on the new replacement starters they were installing. Are they indeed designed diiferently, or just the same starter with locktite on the bolts?

It wont happen again.Almost all small starters such as this are made exactly same.Never heard of this happening before our Phazers.

Thx, what would you estimate for time to complete it the first time and considering one is technically good.

OK, got the starter out, one bolt was loose (but not by much) other one was tight and green index line was about 2" rotated from index tabs. Lined green line up with tabs and temporarily re-installed and it cranked motor.

Should I just red locktite the bolts and re assembly or should it be rebuilt now that it is out. Anything else you guys suggest I do while I have it striped (other than oil and filter of course).

This may seem like a stupid question, but do I have to drain the oil and the gas to peform the starter replacement?
The reason I ask is that my oil and filter was changed less than 100 miles ago, but my starter just died and I have to replace it.

You do not have to drain the gas... but unfortunately, you are going to have to drain the oil or it will all come out once the starter is removed.
