Careful...
I don't know the problem other than than somehow it's sticking....but I remember when the 03's came out I remember seeing pictures of a few that literally burnt to the ground from the that issue.
Replace that starter. I would guess they have an updated one. I would also check for a recall.

Do you mean stop cranking or starts and when you let the key go it keeps spinning. These sleds have a one way starter clutch, it could be slipping.

ok it will stop cranking the motor over but the starter keeps on spinning. i think i just need a new starter.

Probably starter issues. Do you use any additives to your oil? What oil do you use in your sled. There are a few products that can make the starter slip.

i use the stock yamalube and no additives. i will just buy a new starter and take it from there. thanks guys for the info!

Sounds like a relay or solinoid to me. I would wait on buying a starter.
I do not have my Tech Manual with me tonight. Dang, ... The Solinoid could be sticking. What are you doing to get the starter to stop turning over once the sled is running? Shuting off the key? When you turn on the key, does the starter start running before you even take the key to the start position?

the starter is not sticking or anything. i have to put the key in the starting position to get the started to turn over. the gear on the starter motor is not staying on the fly wheel when in the starting position it is pulling back
but when its warm it works good.
but when its warm it works good.

Sound more like A frozen solenoid than the starter motor. I would change the solenoid first its cheaper...

The problem definition is somewhat unclear.
What I'm getting is this; When you turn the key, the starter motor spins, but the engine does not crank. Correct?
If that is the case, then it is NOT the solenoid/relay, and it is NOT the starter motor. Sounds like it is the STARTER CLUTCH part number 8FA-15570-00-00. It could also be ANY OTHER part that sits BETWEEN the starter motor and the crankshaft, NOT INCLUSIVE of the motor or crankshaft.

and if i heat the starter up with a heat gun it works fine. so it must just be the clutch spinning
