Starting an Apex with a "Pull Strap"

Here is a pic of the strap I used. I can't remember if it came with my Apex in 06 or from one of my other sleds but it is 6 foot in length with a small wooden handle on the end with nothing on the other end. There are many types of straps that I bet you could use but it must wrap around the clutch 3 times tight enough not to slip. If testing this out be careful not to accidently start the sled with the key while you are wrapped around the clutch! It is best to use the kill button when ready. By the way, I started the Nytro as well :jump:

Heck I could bring a old rachet strap cut the hook off and wrap one end around a screw driver in my tool kit to make a handle and be good to go. I thought there was something on the other end.

Cool, I have always been worried I have no back up, the battery is 3 years old it could happen at any time.

tried it on my stone cold phazer, It pulls HARD but did start. Also a short strap didn't work, I had to use a 6' long strap to give it enough revolutions to start. That strap is now in my tunnel bag.

Thanks for posting this up Apex2006, some great info and peace of mind knowing we can start our sleds if the battery ever fails us. ;)!

(Saved this to my favorites)

Stabbing the throttle just before you shut it off is sure testing the spark plugs out. You may want to get out of that habit...

Will this work if the battery is dead??? I do not think this is a battery-less EFI system????

Had a dead battery on my 700 FI Grizzly this summer and it would not run with the dead battery. Had to drive it out with the booster pack attached to the quad until the battery got enough charge. I think it started running by itself (crappy running) around 11.2V and would run better and better the more the battery got charged.

Anyone confirm?????

What year Grizz? I killed my battery twice on my 05 and it started and ran fine, took it for a good run and recharged it.

Its an 07 700 with fuel injection. I know carbed versions do not need batteries.

I know this is probably common sense, but just make sure not to use a strap with a looped end incase for some weird reason the strap gets caught and your hand is inside the loop.

Good point Judder, you should never wrap the strap around your hand or wrist. it should be open ended with no loop or hook or anything and you should probably remove your gloves as well. You don't want any possibility of the strap pulling you into the clutch if 'Murphy' rears his head.

You can start it by hand but I doubt you can stall it by hand before injury happens. OH Ya, take the scarf off too...... ;)!

This trick comes in handy on an efi yamaha if your starter or starter solenoid decides to puke out on ya. If your battery is dead , there is no fuel pump, no ECU no nothing.

Would this mean that these sleds could have pull start options? Or would something else have to go on?

Thats from an old Cat. I have the twin I carry with me.

I kept mine from my 1992 Cougar. Best part of the sled.

Yup, must likely from my ZRT-800 or ZR-600 days
