The doo pilot skis only exist because their previous attempt at skis was a very poor knockoff of simmons... that they were sued for... and lost. So as an attempt to save face, they made pretend that their last skis were discontinued for evolutionary reasons. They couldn't go back to standard skis because it would just be too obvious why they did.
I think you can guess at what I am recommending... Maybe take a look at the simmons G2's -- extra wide for extra float. Though I haven't actually seen any up close, they appear to have an identical middle area (i.e. contact patch on hardpack/trails) as original simmons, but tons of extra floatation off trail. In other words, same when on trail, better when off.
