Temp light

Like been stated before, I would start with scratchers and possibly change out the coolant. You could also have some air in your system. Maybe try to to purge your system.

All good ideas but for my money and the snow conditions here in Maine the MPI heat exchanger is the way to go. You can install yourself with a few tools and some patience.

Changed the coolant in turbo install. Running 50/50 mix and cable ide scratchers. In spring if its getting hot while towing at slow speeds.in low snow conditions. I just pull of the hod, to get enough air to the radiator. (have also tied it to my bagback). I think hood wents and maybee the mtx cooler will work good.

Also check If your fan connector is intact. It has happened to me that i pulled it out while phushing the fuel tank to its place.

Studs also helps if its icy/hard snow

Roest Vent Kit may help...I have a 2012 XTX and had the light come on a few times only when idling (for some time). Soon as I took off and hit some loose snow no light...

My plan is to change and flush the cooling system. Install a thermostat, it's got 5000 mi. on it, and check the fan relay and conections. I bought a service manuel so I have good reference material. What is involved with adding the extra heat exchanger? I have a picture of it in the parts books but it's tough to know what I need to plumb it in. I whould like to get some pictures of the install.

Yamaha's optional heat exchanger kit comes with instructions. A bit of work but doable. Rear end raised, rear suspension dropped down, seat and gas tank and a few other parts removed etc.. But the end result is worthwhile. Instead of running around 195, it will run at 175 under good conditions. Its too bad this mountain cooler is not very big and tucked in on front passenger side of tunnel, because nytro is prone to collecting lots of snow/slush near rear of tunnel. It may be worth looking into other models of rear coolers that are mounted on both sides and near the rear. Mountain Performance may have something but there was some talk of cooling too much, if there is such a thing.
Actually I just noticed 1975 has an 08, my experience is with a 09 XTX 144 inch, 08 may not be identical but some principles should apply.
