Hi guys. I am thinking about buying an 05 Rage. I have had Yamis my whole life since the 80's. I currently have an SRX 600 and 2 Vipers. Have an opportunity to buy an 05 rage with low miles for what seems like a good deal - around $5G very clean, well maintained, nice guy. What do I need to know about this sled in terms of updates, service bullitens, etc? How do you guys that have them or have ridden them like the machine. How will it compare to my Vipes? Any comments are very much appreciated. Thanks very much.

Viperpilot, I just purchased a holdover '05 Rage this season. I only have 300 miles on it, but when I get off of it I can't wait until the next time I get back on it. It is my first 4s sled and also my first 136" track. I don't think I will ever go back to a 2s or a short track love them both.
As far as updates, make sure you find out if it has had any or all of the updates done:
1. All '05 RS machines should get an updated CDI box
2. Most all RS machines needed a shim kit put in the primary clutch to reduce the clutch rattle. I didn't have it done right away and it drove me nuts. After it was done it was a night and day difference.......puuurrrs like a kitten now!
3. If the serial number falls with in the correct range it will need a jackshaft replacement.
A Yamaha dealer should be able to show you all of these bullitens. They may say that they don't know about all of them, but if you make them sit and look through the bullitens you will find them.
As for the deal, I am not going to tell you if it is a good deal or not as I don't know the mileage and have not seen the sled. However, if it is in very good shape and has had all of these updates done I think $5G's is reasonable. There was a used '05 at my dealer w/ 3100 miles looked really nice and they were asking $5100.
Hope this information Helps

That is about as good a summary you'll get! I have just over 3K on my '05 Rage and once the Proaction CK skid is dialed in...it is right up there in comfort and performance as some of the nicer skids out there! I think the price is right at $5K if it is in good shape. Buy it! You'll love it. IMO.

only thing I'll add is that the Rage HAS to have a more comfortable ride...doesnt take much to improve over a Viper.

Thanks very much for the replies. Yami1 I really appreciate you taking the time to fill me in on all that knowledge. I don't think it has had any of that work done so I will have to check it out. Do you guys know if all those updates will be covered by Yami or will I have to pay for that?

well even though i have a vector, i love it, im never going back to a 2smoke again. and im getting 22mpg, so if mine runs that good the rage should to.

I recommend shimming the ski's and putting Bergstom triple points or Woodys doolies on it.

viper pilot; the price seems to be in line with others i have seen for sale. talk to your local yamaha dealer about the updates. i just tirned 2k on my 05 and am 1 happy sledder. no problems other than having the updates installed. i average 16 to 18 mpg but i have a1.5" track which means more resitance to pull. yami 1 pretty well sums it up. i also ride with 2 diehard doo guys and love it when they start worrying about where the next gas stop is. it takes time to dial the sled to your weight and riding style but once your'e there the ride is great.136 is the way to go.hope this helps.

viperpilot,
No problem I like to help out fellow snowmobilers. You asked if Yamaha would cover the updates if they were not done? I wouldn't be able to say for sure. I am guessing that some dealers would try and get you to pay for it, but I wouldn't. They are all Yamaha factory bullitens so Yamaha should cover it, even if you are not the first owner.
Any other questions let me know!

I have an '05 and I can tell you it rides pretty darn nice as well! The 136" track really helps the ride and there is nothing really wrong with the Pro-action CK rear if you get it set up right. Very smooth ride. Performance is good. This past weekend in the Black Hills of SD we did a little drag racing and I was able to stay right with my buddies '99 Polaris RMK 700 to 60 MPH and was able to walk away from my father's '02 AC ZL 600. The Rage is a good sled and the 3 cyl. 4 stroke is a great engine. I would recommend this sled. I love riding it!

I have an 05' Rage as well. I ride with an 05' Vector rider an 04" rx1 rider who has an M-10 with Ohlins and an Mxz rider with an M-10. All have ridin my sled and all of them say i have the better ride for the money. (an M-10 cost $13-1700). That long track will only cost you $200 more.I just came back from an 1100 mile trip to Quebec and I wish I was still there. I Love my sled. It's my 4th Yammi and it's definetly the best. If I were you I'd get the Rage!! :rules

The Rage has a very smooth ride and can handle any of the nasties you put it through. Great rear suspension!
