Well after spending the weekend digging my Apex out of the powder I am thinking that I may need something different. My local dealer has a leftover 08 Nitro MTX that I can get a good deal on. Anyone here have experiance with it to compare to the Apex. I know the obvious differences but having never driven the nitro I am a bit unsure if I should do it. Last season I rode mostly on trailes and hardpacked. This year I have been doing more playing around of trail. The MTX seems like a good option.

Much better off trail but really cold.........Still a tank when you get it stuck, and you will if you go off trail

Demo'd one in Jan. in Greenville ME, 5 above f. That thing is one cold machine. The 08 also suffered from poor front end geometry, all changed in 09,if anything I would stay away from the 08.Phazernut said:Well after spending the weekend digging my Apex out of the powder I am thinking that I may need something different. I thought the 09 MTX didn't get some of the changes. This may all be a waste of time anyway. I spoke to the dealer today. I paid $15000 for my 08 last season. The MTX is on now for $10000. They want my sled plus another 1000.00 for the deal. I might be nuts but I am not crazy. Losing $6000.00 in one season is bad enough but I have put about another $2000.00 in it to get it set up like I want. I think I may wait and do a 144 inch upgrade over the sumer and be in mony and still have the power of the 4 holer.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the MTX got the new front suspension geometry changes as Yamaha said it was just for the trail sled. I can not really comment on the sled being cold as I have only done the demo ride twice. It was 7*F when i rode them and I can honestly say i didn't get cold but I have Klim gear and it keeps me pretty warm. They do have side wind deflectors and taller winshields that would probably help for guys that do get cold. But if you're going to off trail it most of the time, I would think it would be fine as you work harder off trail and build up more body heat anyway. I can say I was pleasantly suprised by the power output of that engine though. I curiously also noted that the one with the GYTR shocks darted alot and the one with the Fox Floats ran true and straight. My buddy also said the same thing after he tried them. Good luck with your choice. Gene

Yeah that's the XTX not the MTX. The XTX did get the changes as it is considered a crossover sled intended for trail and some off trail use. The MTX is the mountain version. Phazernut have you tried pulling the limiter strap up one hole? It helps some for offtrail riding. You also have just a 121" skid so extending it would help some. I know some guys on here have said the Apex or Attak does not make a good off trail sled but I have been off trail riding mine ( Attak ) for the last 3 seasons and can honestly say i only have gotten it stuck about 4 times. It does take some getting used to however with you just cannot dump the throttle as the front end will sink. Also takes some restraint on taking off in the deep stuff. I just added the mountain skis to mine and I plan on extending it some more (haven't made up my mind yet either 144" or 151" ) as I have been having a blast off trail with it. For you guys that know the Kingston Plains area around Grand Marais, Michigan this is where most of my riding takes place and you know it gets deep out there. The approach angle is the real problem with these sleds so going to an aftermarket skid helps. I try real hard to not get stuck as when i do I have to rely on whom I'm with to do most of the work getting it out as I broke my spine in 2 places almost 2 years ago and can't do much lifting. That's why I am thinking of extending it to help even more. Gene

I have it up one hole already. This weekend I was running in fresh powder so I guess I got what I went looking for. I think the extension is the way for me to go. Too much of a loss on trading the sled. I can do the extension for the same money anyway.

The mtx is not that good on the trail... Well i guess its not made for it.. Can't be compaired to my attak on the trail but in the power its real fun to ride. One of the downfalls is the track if you ride much hard packed at all the lugs fold over bad i trimed off a half inch and its still folds over a little. I would extened the apex if i were you and use a 1.5'' track Big difference also wider skis makes a big difference since these things are so front heavy.

My C&A's are nice and wide. The long track idea is getting closer every day

i would keep the apex mtx, i have a nytro, not a long track, but still, i have an attak as well and i like my attak way more. it is a little heavier but its much better. more power and you get better fuel mileage (when you're riding aggressive) the nytro has a REALLY small tank, 7.4 gallons, it SUCKS

No matter wht you get, youre gonna get it stuck sometime, and they are all a pain, no matter what brand..
IMO, I'd invest in a good mountain shovel, and a snow bungee. Viper_Dave had one in Muni, and it made pulling sleds out of the deep stuff a LOT easier..

I think I'm going to get the 144 kit from Ulmer. Now I just need to figure out what track to get and what else I'll need to go with it. Any suggestions.

I went from an 08 Apex LTX GT to an 08 Nytro MTX with turbo. I absolutely loved the 136" Apex until I got in any kind of powder then it was just a waste of a good motor. This can be fixed with a different track and skid and skis. As noted the attack angle on the track is pretty steep which trenches you down pretty quick.
I also do a good amount of trail riding and found the Nytro to be a bear. It was very darty/sketchy/nervous handling especially if there was any hardpack or snow melt. I didn't mind the Nytro so much until I got back on an Apex. Then I realized what I was missing and promptly sold the Nytro.
So needless to say I'm back on an Ape. Which I must say looks better, sounds better, seems better on fuel, and all around a much smoother, easier riding , comfortable machine.
