I was just looking at the VL I just bought and just checking things out and I pulled up on the air box and popped the rubber intake boots off the cylinder. I was looking at how in the heck I was going to get a alen wrench to tighten the boot up when you cant even see them when the boots are attached, and all then I pushed on the air box and the joints just snapped back on the cylinder. I'm use to 2 strokes where that fit better be tight as heck or you could get a lean burn down. Is this "snap" fit the way it's supposed to fit? Or do I need to get them so tight that you can't pull them off with out losseing the alen bolt? I really don't think I could see or get to them if I wanted to so I'm guessing you just push them on.

Not sure what you mean by "boot" but the airbox itself is held by three allen screws accessible from the top of the airbox through the three rubber plugs. Need a fairly long allen wrench to get to them. There are two rubber air horns inside the box but all they do is direct air into the throttle bodies.

Unlike two strokes, air leaks will not lean out 4 strokes. Even if it did run lean, it would just run like crap and not blow up. Totally different beast.

In the parts diagram it's called a joint. In a 2s I would call it the motor side of the carb boot but on this there is a round flange that's part of the cylinder it attaches to. Anyhow I just went out to try to get a picture with it pulled back off (thought it would show up better in the picture then being attached) and for some reason, may be because its colder out and the motor hasn't been run yet today but the connection is tight and it seems to be just fine.

If I can explain it this was, yesterday I was looking for the ecu and I thought maybe it was under the air box (I know where it is now) and when I pulled up slightly up on the air box assembly everything from there came disconnected from the motor. I could see the intake ports in the cylinder casting.

I was just surprised to have the boots just pop back in place by just pushing the air box back down because on a 2s when you take your carbs off getting that intake boot reconnected is a pain and needs to be supper tight. I would like to tighten the clamp that's on the boot while its attached but it impossible to even see the one when everything is attached.

You shouldn't be able to move the airbox freely if it is screwed down with the 3 screws inside it. I've had mine off many times and don't remember any clamps that needed to be tightened - just a bunch of connections and hoses to fiddle with. If you go to one of the sections at the top of the forum and search them there may be instructions and pics for this.

all the best and let us know your location, thanks

OK, had a look at the parts fiche and saw the joint you're talking about. I've never been under the throttle bodies so never saw them before. Yeah, those should be tight and not come off easily unless you really yanked on the airbox hard (which I doubt you did). Like anything, they could have worked themselves loose. Simple enough to just retighten them.

What you saw were the intake valves in the intake ports of the cylinder head. I'm still amazed that these little engines have 5 valves per cylinder (3 intake, 2 exhaust). Quite a bit of engineering went in these powerplants.
