Ticking sound

I'm breaking in my new multi purpose and noticed today that when cruising at a steady speed for moments at a time I hear a ticking sound. It's not very loud but definitely there.

Anyone out there experience something like this before?

Yes, I've noticed it and have no idea what it is. Doesn't do it so much now or I just don't notice it anymore. If it's the same noise as yours, it sorta sounds like metal expansion and it's irregular.

Would different octane fuels cause any different noise? Is Yamaha still recommending 91 Octane for them?
One source of ticking noise could be heat in the exhaust system but I only hear that when I stop after idling it for awhile.

Sadly, I live in Labrador and we only have one octane available in my town. Of course, it's the lowest grade.
The machine is performing beautifully, it's just the ticking or tapping sound I noticed yesterday that gave me a bit of concern.

It's nice to know that Mooseman has heard the same sort of noise before, although I'm not sure exactly what metal expansion sounds like.

I used to hear it while moving, like you, at a steady speed, especially when I first got it when it had 800km. It would sound like a low sharp pinging. Metal expansion noise you sometimes hear from a hot exhaust that's cooling or a wood stove pipe heating up.

I've seen changes in fuel requirements over the years for these sleds. Mine says to use premium, my son's Phazer says regular. Either way, all of them have knock sensors to protect the engine from damage so don't worry. I don't think your noise is engine knock or ping.
