hello , I own a VK540 and I’m about to purchase a new 2017 sr viper mtx 153. I’ve been trying to do my research . I ride in the tug hill region of NY , trail and off trail . Would you all recommend buying the viper ? It looks like a great sled but I’ve found a bunch of negative reviews on them and I’m getting cold feet . Thanks ahead of time

What negative reviews are giving you cold feet?
 
I was searching the internet and a number of people we’re having starting issues and a few people had Some issues with track clips I believe and a few other complaints . I know that there will always be some that will have problems in all brands . It seems that the folks without issues love the way they ride and as you would expect the ones that are having problems recommend not touching them . I’m not a high performance top speed guy . I love my vk540 rides fine for me and I’ve not had it stuck In The woods yet . I’d get another one but I would like something a little more sporty for my second sled .My reason for owning Yamaha is reliability so I just want a sled that will be reliable . My reason for getting another sled is my wife doesn’t want to sit In The cabin while I’m out riding . I also didn’t realize all that happened between arctic cat and Yamaha . Seems there aren’t many Yamaha’s being made anymore . I’d like to get a Yamaha .
 
I would caution you in considering the MTX for trail riding and low elevation. The narrow ski stance and lack of a sway bar are a major compromise for trail riding. Converting to a wider front end can be costly. Gearing and clutch calibration will need to be changed. Do you believe that you are capable of doing that yourself? If not then the additional cost of a clutch kit plus installation labor should be added in to the cost of the sled. A BTX or XTX are probably better options even if you have to pay a little more. There is a reason that left over MTX’s can be found so cheap. -PeeWee

That ski stance is skinny, but for some reason on that mtx, it actually handles really well in trails. I own a16, and I would own another one in a heartbeat even for trail riding. It's sporty, very torquey, and as far as elevation it just needed some clutch weights to keep it from revving in our elevation. Then you have a sled that will go anywhere. And I mean anywhere. It's actually the most all around sled period. Very reliable and quiet.
