There have been a lot of complaints from riders in regards to their new sleds being slow, mostly from the new Viper owners.
Since the common availability of GPS the manufacturers are no longer able to get away with dream meters that back in the day would have 340s doing 100mph!
Back in the haydays of the mighty 2 stroke triple triples it was not uncommon for well setup sleds to legitimately break the century mark on a regular basis.
Lets look at those sleds...
-140hp SRXs to up to 165hp TCats
-under one inch lug 121" tracks...light and flexable
-sleds slammed low to ground with short travel suspensions
-low seats, low profile hoods and short windshields [The VMAX 4 was even designed in a wind tunnel for low coefficient of drag!]
-no reverse chaincases
-single runner plastic skiis
-ect ect
I guess these sleds were rockets!!! ...although I have always had a Radar gun for the last 20 years[I called it the "Dream Crusher"] and even these speed monsters would not all break 100MPH on snow.
Lets look at the new sleds:
-130hp 1200 Doo or Viper to 165hp Doo or Cat
-128 to 144" minimum 1 1/4" tracks...read HEAVY ROTATING MASS
-ultra long travel with very high frontal area
-high seats, upright rider position, high bars, sharp edges with high coefficients of drag
-four strokes with massive reverse chaincases...heavy drag and rotating mass
-dual runner wide skiis...lots of drag
ect ect
Obviously everyone sees where I am going with this...its amazing ANY of the new sleds break 90 mph on snow...let alone 100!!!
If the dream meters were as they were in the past, and there were no GPSs available, and the Viper speedo was indicating 110mph everyone would be happy again.

The issue is that a lot of lower HP sleds still run faster. One of the saddest examples is when the Cat 5000 series out tops a Viper. The Cat 5000 is the 1100 zuki twin non turbo rated at like 120HP. Then there is the inconsistency from unit to unit.
There isn't much out there over 600 cc's that won't pass most Vipers on the lake.
Reports of Vectors driving right on by as well.
It's not the actual number or the speedo accuracy it's real world experiences.

Kinda easy to see most reader's are tired of this damn subject. I hope Mr. Sled just makes a CRYBABY section and just put all these in that section, all I have got from all the post and replies on top speed complaints is that I love my old RX1, won't get passed by many unless I let them, so good rideing to all.

For me it's inconsistency not speed. Spent all day Saturday clutching, changing rivet sizes, changing rivet positions, changing Primary springs, changing secondary preloads, even changed secondary springs to WW from Nytro. Finally three back to back runs of between 8900 and 9000, no pinging the rev limiter pulled well.
AHHHHH finally figured this thing out.
Went out for a ride Monday, the only thing that changed was the weather, temp went from -30 Saturday to -20 Monday, the sled barely made 8400 could not make 140 KPH.
Has nothing to do rotating mass, aerodynamics, seating position, mass of the #*$&@ on the seat.

My 03 rx1 was and still is my fastest sled on ice yet,but add much snow, and the little button track would spin most of its hp out the snow flap, but add a 144 1.25 track like I now have in the ape xtx,and its amzing it can go past 100 on groomed snow, but it does, and it is not even studded, and may stay that way,as most of my sleds that have studs just tear stuff up and ways, but ya if I want to really know how fast my new stuff goes, slam, stud and find some smooth ice! But I just asked to see if any more of the 2015 apex xtx's are as fast as the new one I have,or are they faster yet?Kinda easy to see most reader's are tired of this damn subject. X2 on all that. Apex XTX, it's just so fast bone stock in the widest conditions. It seems that all the "fast" sleds were just that in one particular condition. I am so impressed from day to day and in all conditions that the XTX is considered fast that I just don't care to compare anymore.
Yes, there are conditions that others outrun it, but I am just tickled to know that in 90% of all the conditions I run it, this sled will be competitive. I don't care what Yamaha comes out with next week, Nothing will replace this XTX anytime soon. That doesn't mean I may watch for a phazer replacement in the stable! HA
