TORS problem

I was having the same TORS problems. The service tech was at the Yamaha dealer the day I brought it in and he said he would send up new 2006 carbs.
They wouldn't tell the dealer what the fix was with the new carbs but since they put them on - no more TORS problems. At least not yet! (100kms since).

That tors problem happened the first time yesterday. 984 miles on the odo but the speedo-odometer are not working ( speed shown varies between 0 and 15 mph) since the sled has about 600 miles. At the time, my dealer told me that the problem for the speedo-odometer was the speed sensor. This part was and is b/o until february the 7th. Then yesterday, he said that Yamaha told him that the problem was due to speed sensor also, as for other customers who are experiencing the same "Tors" and speedo problems. I am surprised that it does not seems the same for the repliers on this topic.

THE FIRST 400 MILES I PUT ON I HAD THE PROBLEM 3 OR 4 TIMES. SLOWING DOWN TO A NEAR STOP AND THE YELLOW LITE WOULD COME ON, LET IT IDLE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN ALL IS OK AND AWAY I GO ,RUNS GREAT.

WHEN I GOT HOME I WENT TO THE DEALER FOR A 300 MILE CHECK UP AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM.

I PICKED UP THE SLED AND THIS WAS HIS REPLY! HOW WAS I STARTING A COLD ENGINE. I TOLD HIM I OPENED THE CHOKE ALL THE WAY AND WHEN IT STARTED BACKED OFF ON THE CHOKE UNTIL IT RAN WITHOUT THE CHOKE.

HE SHOWED ME THE SPARK PLUGS WHICH HE HAD CHANGED AND SAID ONE HAD A SMALL BUILD UP OF CARBON OR SOMETHING. HIS SOLUTION WAS TO START THE ENGINE DIFFERENTLY. WHEN COLD TURN THE ENGINE OVER AND ADVANCE THE CHOKE SLOWLY UNTIL THE ENGINE STARTS,THEN BACK OFF SOME ON THE CHOKE AND HELP IT OUT USING THE THROTTLE.IT WAS OK TO LET IT IDLE ROUGHLY,THIS SMOOTHES OUT AS THE ENGINE WARMS.

APPARENTLY FULL CHOKE TENDS TO OVER LOAD THE ENGINE WITH GAS AND THIS SCREWS UP THE PLUGS.THE SEMI FOULED PLUG EFFECTS THE SENSOR AND ACTIVATES THE THORS SYSTEM.


I WASN'T SURE IF THE GUY WAS BLOWING SMOKE OR WHAT,BUT SINCE THEN I HAVE NOT HAD THE PROBLEM AGAIN. I'VE PUT ON ANOTHER 450 MILES AND THINGS ARE GREAT.

LET ME HEAR SOME FEED BACK OR IF ANYBODY TRIES THIS AND FINDS IT WORKS.

My first thought was that your dealer is blowing smoke. TORS used to be a simple mechanism, one that I've had to frequently deal with on more than 25 Yamaha snowmobiles I've owned since my good ol' 1984 Phazer. Then, it was just a pair of on-off switches and off-open condition just shut the engine down. I've had to disconnect and bypass the TORS on dozens of occasions over the years. I just had a "code 84" TORS issue for the first time this afternoon. PITA.

But now, things are more complicated and TORS activation doesn't shut the engine down, it actually interrupts the spark intermittently but keeps the engine running. The thing that makes me wonder whether or not your dealer might be onto something is the statement in the owner's manual "BE SURE TO USE THE SPECIFIED SPARK PLUG AND SPARK PLUG CAP. OTHERWISE THE T.O.R.S. WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY"

Now, I confess I'm not clear on what the spark plug has to do with TORS, but it appears that these TORS problems may be more complicated than simply throttle free-play and cable routing.

Regardless, I would have no hesitation in disconnecting and bypassing the whole silly TORS system (per owner's manual) if my dealer or I couldn't solve the problem quickly and easily, first time at bat. And I'm pretty sure I would just disconnect it before going through a bunch of arcane choking-starting gyrations that are different from every other 4 stroke small engine vehicle I've ever owned.

My dealer replaced part on the carbs (tps?i don't kmow) he just received from Yamaha for tors problem and it solved that, at least for the following 100 miles I made.

TORS - Speedo

I have a RS Venture up to yesterday only 130km - I've had the TORS go off more times then I can count. After the 1st day check this site and adjusted the free play to 5mm it ran better (less errors) But still the TORS would activate. Then took it back to the dealer they did confirm that the throttle cable was misrouted they re-routed the cable and check TORS switch and re set it again. Got home tried it again - went around the back yard and it went off 3 more times. (The dealer set the free play at 3mm) Called dealer told him about the problem again he told me to reset it to 4 or 5 mm try it again. Again after readjusting it ran better but still TORS would reactivate. – I bypassed the TORS as shown on www.totallyamaha.com ran 200km yesterday and the sled ran w/o any problems except lack of lights a few times. Dealer wants me to bring it back in Monday.

The other problem I had yesterday just after unloading sled I started it, drove off the trailer, turned off sled. The next 2 times I stated it I had no lights, speedo, tack, nothing at all, 3rd time I started everything worked and no other problems the rest of the day. 1st real ride and very impressed with power and handling, I do find the clutch noisy (dealer has ordered a shim kit) and a VERY LOUD TRACK.

i'm lucky

Man, I'm counting my blessings that the one visit back to the dealer early on cured my problems, other than the noisey clutch. I don't seem to have all of the common problems and the TORS thing is fixed with the re-route.

The spark plug statement may be feasable, but I always start mine with the choke lever all the way closed, opening it slightly after it fires up, and start backing it off when it starts loading up. Hasn't caused any problems.

my tors didnt act up until i had 2900 miles on my sled....and since then everytrip i've had problems with it on justa bout every trip. luckily i was ridin by a yamaha dealer and he adjusted it, and the next day it started to cut out so we rode up there, and he adjusted it...finally on the third trip up there he bypassed it. u can ride with tors activating itself...just dont let ur sled idle low..keep the rpms just below where ur clutch engages-and make sure ur not going fast and let off the throttle...it will cut out

Mine cranks just fine and the lights come on right away regardless of the temperature. (Knock on wood)

I am sorry to get off-topic here, but down to what temps will your sled start unassisted (no heaters/no jump starts)?

My sled hasn't seen starting temps much colder than -10 f but I have never had to jump start or charge the battery since I bought it.

Gypsy; I had to move my 05 Vector to the shop for greasing today; it is
-41 degrees here is lovely Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba. Sled turned over a little sluggish but started great. Stalled once and then fired right up and stayed running. All I know is that it is real important to use gas formulated for the winter; another thread spoke about this at great length. I know this to be true for sure because my first ride was with some gas that I had left from the summer in a container and the sled wouldn't start till I put a heater on it.
As for the TORS issue my dealer says that it is a carb issue and expects Yamaha to do something about it eventually; recommends everybody having problems to email Yamaha.

Well it's cold here today but about 30 degrees warmer than that. I just went out to get the sled off the trailer from last week's ride to get it into the garage to thaw. Skid was frozen solid. It cranked right over and stayed running but no lights or gauge worked for a good long time like others describe. First time it's happened to me. After warm up everything came on and works fine.

Do you guys add isopropyl to your tank also?

Hi everyone. I just bought a 2007 yamaha vk and seem to be having tors problems. Of course it ran fine and the dealer when I tried it, but as soon as I got it home, I had trouble to get it off the truck. The tors was kicking it. red light on and code 84. After reading all the info on this site I disconnected the tors under the handle bar pad and re plugged the ones running to the motor together,. But I seem to still have the problem. It seem to be more when the sled is cold> I leave it warm up until the red light goes off and that's when it happens. If I leave it warm up longer and shut it off then start it back up the problem is gone. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there any other way of disconnecting this system,? Also when I got to the dealer he had it running already, (bombi dealer) so i'm assuming he knew about it. Got a great deal on the sled, but I drove 4 hours to go get it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I just recently got an 05 Vector, hasnt been used in a while and only would run with the choke on so I went ahead and cleaned the carbs, fresh tank of 91+sea foam. It helped a bit, started thinking it was this TORS problem. So i bypassed it, adjusted throttle free play and idle speed. Still no luck. Could it be the ignitor? I heard that they were faulty on these sleds. I cant get more than 60-70kph out of it and it backfires, hesitates, bogs at low idle and really likes the choke. I'm gonna change plugs and maybe clean carbs again. My out of ideas.

Clean your carbs again dont get the main and power jets mixed up your mains should be 135's and install inline fuel filters.
