Going to Tug Hill NY. In a few weeks. Never been before. I was hoping to get some advice as to what on trail hotel to stay at. Me and my buddy primarily ride mountain sleds and would like to be close to good off trail riding most importantly.

There's really no off trail riding on the Tug.

Just because it's not posted doesn't mean it's not private land. Stay on the trails or stay home.

If you want to ride the trails on the Hill the Ridgeview in Lowville is a great hotel but you need to book yearly.

X2

Lots of farmers have winter wheat or hay planted. Many of the trails cross these fields at a corner or along an edge. The gracious land owner is potentially sacrificing income (crops) where those trails run. Far too many trails have already been closed because people will not stay between the stakes.

All it takes is watching NYSSA's page and you can see its a constant battle to keep the state owned trails open to sleds, they're always begging us to write to the state about keeping certain trails and corridors open to sledders. Private land owners are gracious enough to let trails go thru their property, and like Brian said sometimes it skirts a field, other times it goes straight thru one. They can and do rescind those passage rights on a whim if they like due to people ignoring the boundaries they have agreed to allow. A guy at work was riding up by Winonna and they took a trail in the morning toward lowville and the tug, on the way back there was now logs over the trail and a sign to the effect to go F yourselves Trail Closed. Plenty of clubs are also getting flack over the 2 or 3 am fly bys of people with loud pipes just hammering it down the trail and waking the dead. We're the stewards of these winter trails, we need to show some respect for those who give us the ability to enjoy this sport on a larger plot than just that that we own.

It amazes me that anyone would assume that because there is no signage anything goes. For that matter, it amazes me that even with signage they disregard postings. Remember riding most NYS trails is a privilege not a right!

Seems like I started the next worst thing to a "which exhaust can is best" war. Didn't mean to do so. I made a few phone calls to hotels on the tug hill plateau. Two of which offer riding for those looking for off trail on their land. If anyone is looking for the contact info pm me and I'll fwd it along.

I'm interested in knowing which hotels offer off trail riding. Just post it here for all to see.

No thanks. I'll keep it private for those that are interested. I'm not interested in fueling your flaming. Riding off trail can be done with adequate care so as to not upset land owners.

If a hotel offers off trail riding I don't think they would keep it a secrete so why not post for all that ride that area. This doesn't make sense because I've stayed at most hotels in that area and I don't know of any off trail riding being offered.

Grizz. I value what you have to say in regards to repair and preventive maintenance on sleds. But I'm not really interested in your thoughts on how I choose to spend my time snowmobiling. I have spent 20+ years riding trails. I appreciate the challenge of off trail riding. My previous post which I stated if it's not posted it's fair game was poorly chosen by me. Please bear in mind I have avoided posted areas with due diligence. The thing that keeps me on my toes is the drunks and people that can't keep on their side of the trail. In my perspective view of reality it's not those that deviate from the trail that cause problems. It's drunk drivers, loud exhaust and those that can't understand how much ice you need to ride a sled on.
