Just went to see a new Phazer in person. Local dealer got a standard Phazer in blue, looks great. The one concern is the opening in the tunnel. Now I'm not an expert but it looks like one hell of a lot of snow will be flying on the back of the riders legs. Won't this cause the rider to be wet all the time? What about marginal conditions (slush, snirt, mudholes) we've all been there? Am I missing something???

I rode a demo and it seemed to get a bit of snow on the legs but not excessive by any means and this was on the Mtn version. I think if yamaha hears lots of complaints about it you might end up seeing some changes to it. It is a first year sled so expect to see a lot of tweaking in for a year or two.
I asked about the hole when I was test riding. If the hole is covered up, the exhaust gets too hot and you will lose hp. I did not have any problems with snow coming up thru the hole to speak of.
Lets ALL give Doug a warm welcome! How ya' doing buddy? Jay

well i talked to the rep adn they said there were going to make the opening smaller...but i just saw a phazer at my local dealer and to me it looks the same...but i am just eye balling it since i didnt have a tape measure handy. but from what i saw there was some ice build up by the seat, or under it should i say...but nothin to where a quick kick with your boot wouldnt take care of

thats interesting cuz everything i've ever read says coldest intake air possible and hottest exhaust pipes equal the most horse.

If they have an exhaust temp problem why not just ceramic coat the pipes?

coatings are so thin i doubt it would help much

Cooling of the pipes helps accellerate the exhaust flow, if it were enclosed it would get too hot. Sounds like an excellent design they came up with.

Supposedly the hole in the tunnel helps keep the exhaust cool. Id bet it reduced some weight too.
Id normally be a little bit worried about the strength of the tunnel, but Yamaha has proven that they know what they are doing, so Im not worried.

that sheet metal is so thin there weight coulda be more then 1/8 of a pound.
my biggest suprise is safety. im surprised regulations allow that hole there. just figured some safety freak would give yamaha #*$&@ saying its to dangerous.
regardless.... the sled is awesome.... sleds shoulda been designed like this years ago if not from day one.
this sled changes everything.... its sick!
