Rookie question.
Putting a back country 1.75 track on my 09 xtx.
Followed THE GREAT POST in the General Nytro FAQ about tearing down to get the track out.
THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT POST!!! http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=47824
Being the rookie that I am, I got confused about the tunnel and front protectors....
Cound not find an idiots guide!
My GUESS is to put the 1.75 track in, I need to grind the welds off the tubing in front of the tunnel, leaving the ribbed aluminum plate. I also need to remove the about 1" square tubing that runs the length of the tunnel on both sides.
When done the images should look like this post. I should only remove the tubing, no sheet metal? http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic....&postorder=asc&highlight=remove+track&start=0
THANKS
PS, still happy as heck about the posts with picks for removing the track - THANKS!!!

Yes you have to remove the tubing and the brackets that connect them to the tunnel.
The ribbed aluminium plate that you are mentioning is the heat exchanger, you have to be very careful when removing the front protectors so you dont puncture the exchanger.

Like Eson says, VERY careful - the green, sticky liquid is not many millimeters behind the ribbed surface...
A Dremel with cut wheel worked OK for me.

i also have a stupid question can i cut my tunnel protecters off at about half way just after the bracket. reason is that that is where the ice builds up and i dont have studs and have original track

I would say that you can - as long as you make some nice ends on whatever is left in the sled. Please remember that during braking, the track reaches quite far up the tunnel. You do not want the track to catch the ends of two cut-off stud protectors, then you are likely looking at a disaster with wrecked track, tunnel and heat exchanger...

so maybe i am better off taking them right out ?

Then I would think that during braking the track would flare up and hit the exhaust?
Just take them out completely. Me and several others have thousands of problem free miles with them completely removed.

How hard to do you ride though? I would think aggressiveness would effect greatly the chances of the track hitting the exhaust

that is my only fear too is the track hitting the exhaust just wanted to get away from kicking the side of the tunnel
I ride hard, on very beat up trails that get groomed maybe twice a year = big bumps. Maybe the track could touch the exhaust at some times, but there are no sharp edges on the exhaust that the luggs coud hook on to. I have a 1.75" track so if you are using the stock track there would be more clearance.
Btw you get snow/ice buildup in the tunnel even with the protectors removed, not as much tho.

Interference between track and exhaust system is not an issue on the FX Nytro, at least not on the shorties. The exhaust sits further away from the track compared to the RX-1 and Apex, for instance. Like Eson, I am using a 1.75" track and I have got the stud protectors removed. I seem to remember that the last time I checked, I did not have any track marks under the headers, collector or midpipe of the exhaust system. Most of the RX-1 and Apex that are running big lug tracks without stud protectors get a lot of track marks under the exhaust system, but like Eson says, this is still not an issue since there are no sharp edges to catch. I would be much more worried about leaving sharp edges on a cut-off stud protector...

I was also trying to figure out if those tunnel protectors provide any strength to the tunnel, but they aren't held on by much so I'm not sure
