Turbo

I did the install, didn't have any major problems. I think you will do ok if you have a pretty good tool assortment. The cam timing and head are the most difficult parts. Getting the timing chain back on it is the WORST part. I'll try to help if I can.
I spent more time re-doing hose routing and wiring after test fitting things than needed, but some of the steps are not laid out very well when it comes to R and R of the non turbo parts. I spent a couple hours on the charge tube routing trying to make it look like a picture did but ended up getting it.

Yeah, slotting the cam sprockets will be the most technical thing, but I've done it before. If you can remember anything else the instructions didn't cover, please let me know! Thanx

When you take off the front end of the sled, all you need to take off is about 8 bolts all located on the side of the sled by the primary clutch and behind the oil tank, then slide the entire assembly forward and it will come out. this will include the a arms, shocks, skis and bulkhead ;)!

Sweet intel, steepndeep. I appreciate any help I can get before I begin on Monday. I don't have a front end stand. Got any suggestions on improvisations?

Oh, yeah. Why was the cam chain so hard? Doesn't backing the tensioner off give you enough slack?

Hey, teerex and aksteepndeep! I just got my MCX. You guys got any hot tips for the install? I bet you have pics, teerex. I think everyone(especially me) would love to see them!

That turbo will make your little two-banger pull so hard you will laugh all the way to the bank :tg:

Sunday is sledding day, tomorrow I will put on a turbo pressure gauge just to keep an eye on what's happening in there. My shop said they set it on 13 psi so there should be a good 150 hp.

When I pulled the front end off, I put jack stands under the foot rest area, then put a bag o dog food on the rar of the tunnel. That held it off the ground in the front. The reason the timing chain is a beech is that there is very little slack in the chain to begin with. Putting the head shim in takes almost all of the remaining slack out. Also, the intake cam is collapsing a few valve springs when on top dead center. You have to basically install the intake cam, hold it where it doesn't want to be, slip the exhaust cam under the chain, hitting the precise tooth to get it timed correctly, then install the second cam being carefull not to break the cam or sprocket. I think I made it sound worst than it was, but I had a second set of hands helping, couldn't see doing it alone :o|

Thanx, steepndeep. I forgot about #2 springs. Yeah, it sounds like there's no way around this being a total beotch, but hey, it will be way worth it! I'm sure you guys always have a sh!t eating grin on your faces. You got a mtn lite, steepndeep, and did you change the track? Was engine braking reduced with compression and how'd you set up your intake? Thanx again, guys.

Try not to crash for the next few days, teerex

Yea, I(wife) got a mounain. It still has the stock track, but I want to go to a 2.5" camo, just waiting to see if they make a maveric or something i don't have to cut down to fit. I was leaning towards getting a new Nytro MTX, but the more seat time I get, I am thinking of another phazer with boost for me. I'll make up my mind after a demo ride if I can get one ;)!

Lost a bit of pressure, seems like a hose could be loose or something.. I only get about 8 psi which gets me pissed off a bit :o|
I have heard of other having trouble with a hose clamp. It's hard to reach but I got a pic of this one through a tiny opening in the front.
Is this the problem ? Somebody (MCX?) have made some markings on the tube:

Mine kept sliding off the intercooler until I got the clamp really tight. I would look for a similar clamp that is on the throttle bodies or intercooler. Much better clamp setup. I will be getting the different air filter intake kit. I can't go 10 minutes in deep powder and I loose ALL power. I have been looking for a 180 degree bend to try but am not having any luck.

Great info guys, I'm sure a lot of us are curious to see how the turbo's hold out etc. Keep us posted, I'm a flatlander, who will be looking for an FX soon enough. A turbo would be a nice upgrade to do later down the road. Just worried will the engine take the turbo for the long haul??

Cheers

Finally got a chance to play with a Phazer with a MCX turbo kit on it! Impressive little sled!

;)!

The dealer in Butte, MT uses PVC for his intake. You can assemble any shape you want with different parts. You just need the short section of hose to attach to the turbo.
