Planning a trip near Houghton for next weekend (10-12th), only problem is, it's winter carnival and we can't find a hotel. Any recommendations for hotels just outside of the main city?

We ran into the same problem booking a week ago. We ended up getting a place to stay in ontonagon. Petersons cottages. We are supposed to get up there on thursday night. I think your, as well as our bigger concern should be whether or not it snows this week.... Thats my biggest concern at this point. This winter has sucked. Worst one i can remember

well the good news is temps there are supposed to stay in the teens, as well as a chance of snow almost everyday this week. *crossing or fingers*

Got my trip finalized. I had a heck of a time finding places to stay. I managed to get the last room available Friday night at the AmericInn in Calumet, and the last room available Saturday night at the Maple Ridge Motel in Bergland. Both places say they still have quite a bit of snow, with more expected all week this week. I feel sorry for those who book their Winter Carnival weekends a year in advance, haha! (not really)

Let us know how riding is up in the keweenaw saturday and ill let you know what its like in the bergland area. We will probably ride where the snows the best friday and saturday. Probably south and west and then northeast later in the trip. Man i hope it snows. Only looks like 3-6"+ by saturday but nws says maybe a 3rd cold front dropping down saturday night/sunday morn with more snow. Man i hope so. We have already decided that the four of us are heading up no matter what on thursday. Just gonna be in the mindset that its a vacation and any sledding is just a bonus, lol. 600 miles one way 10.5 hours. Normally we would try and ride the lower pen. But thats not gonna happen this year.

I'd had north first if I were you. Those trails are going to be beat this weekend with all the traffic. We're hoping to stay off the beaten path and hit some old logging roads down by Dreamland on Saturday.

I fear in a week or two this god forsaken sledding season will be over due to warm temp and no new snow....

Agreed. It never even got started here in the central/southern midwest. 1st time thAt i can remember where there wasnt 1 single rideable snow. Most snow we had all season was the very end of november. Got about 3.5" of slushy snow. Well look at the bright side, atleast my sleds are both fully prepped for next season, lol

We canceled our trip. 3-5" forecasted just isnt going to domit for us. Maybe if it were a system snow being forecasted it would be a different story. But this is supposed to be pure lake effect. All bets are off with that.

I hate this winter!
My group's trip is still on, we'll let you know how the conditions are. We're hoping to stay mainly on old logging roads, we found plenty of snow on those last weekend.

just got back from hurley 5 min. ago. went 5 miles and turned around. unrideable. any good spots at all are so hard the slids were melting. took a ride in the truck looking for snow all the way to ontonogon. nothing any better. they say 1-2 inchs tomorrow and flurries after that. doesnt pay unless you want to beat your sled

For those riding in the UP this weekend be careful. A rider lost his life yesterday outside of Grand Marais. They think he failed to negotiate a turn due to ice.
I will be heading up tomorrow to do a bit of off trail riding this weekend and then summerize the sleds.
