Valve Shims

I am waiting on a replacement engine for my turbo Apex, I want to check and adjust the valve clearance before I install it, however, I CANNOT find info as to what size shims I need, either 7.48mm or 9.48mm. I think they are the 7 but I want to make sure, I plan on ordering a shim kit so I can get it all done at once and not have to wait for shims to arrive in the mail.
Anybody have any insight on this?

First things first:You don't even know if this replacement engine will be out of spec clearance wise. Since it sounds like you'll be swapping engines, it would be advantages to check/adjust the clearance before you re-install the new engine, as you have already concluded.

I'm not aware of shim kits being offered by Yamaha but, a shim kit would likely be expensive based on the number of shims that it would need to include. I would be very cautious of using any aftermarket shim kits.

I applaud your desire to be proactive and prepared, however, in THIS case it may be beneficial to wait and see how things play out with this replacement engine. It may turn out that you need nothing, and its ready to drop in as-is.

Appreciate the reply. I was hoping to set all the valves at the high end of spec because the sled it’s going in will be boosted. That’s what I’ve read is the best thing to do

This is the first time I've ever heard of that being done. Can't really think of any reason to do that. But, if it makes you feel more comfortable about the setup, it's YOUR sled.

The valve shims in the Apex are different sizes from stem to stem. You will need to measure each stem clearance and record the findings. Second remove the cams and see what shim is on the valve stem you measured previously. Then calculate how much clearance you need/want. You will either need new shims or swap shims around to achieve the desired valve clearance.
