Viper RTX LE clutching

The more I think about it the more I think I need to load the weights back up and change the helix to slow down the shift. I think what little RPM I gain by removing weight is probably belt slip.

Hopefully conditions will improve. This season I am on the field adjacent to last years and I have about 300' more length. Snow is not well packed yet, but last year I was hitting 77 mph on the shorter stretch and this year 71-73...

Helix is Ulmer H. I searched but could not find his angles and even then they do not correlate with the norm.

K is 49-41 and H is said to be slower shift in the second stage.

Just got back from a ride. Can it from say 20-30 mph and it jumps right to about 8500. It does quite well for the relatively low RPM. If the stretch is long enough the RPM's will climb but not until past 70 mph. I haven't checked the clutches, but this is about the range that they start to smear up. I also have not yet gone tighter than a 6-2 wrap.

My thought is that since the 46-40 seems popular I might try something like 46-38 or 48-38 just for grins.

I also am intrigued by the concept behind teh Dalton R series. Short ramp first stage to control overrev then acts more like straight angle. Problem is they have a huge spread of angles and 40 is about the lowest finish.

I don't think a sharp angle helix is what's making low rpm, first season with mine with just s clutch kit the helix I ran was a 50/46, it would hold 8800-9000 perfectly in a range of loose snow to hard packed.

Testing a 46/36 helix from BDX-because they are cheap and ready quick. I had to drill a new 6 hole, but with this helix I now run 8800-9000 in relatively loose conditions with my light tip weight. I added 1.3g more tip weight and now I need to get to some decent conditions to test. So far I have minimal belt dust and it's not smearing the clutches like it did last season, BUT I have not tried to sustain 80mph+ as conditions have not allowed.

TD. Your initial pic on this thread shows lots of black on your clutches.

Put the sled on a stand. Take the belt off and rotate the secondary by hand. See how hard it is to rotate the track.
Check all areas where there could be excessive drag.
Check track tension, chain tension, brake. Check all your idler wheels for drag.
Pull your clutches and check for sticking, check the weights for sticking.

Clean the clutch sheaves and belt real good before you do more testing.
Something seems to be holding you back.

I have an 2015 rtx le blue/orange and im struggeling with my clutching.. I have full hindle exhaust upgrade with pcv and mod air box. I run with green-silver-green primary spring, supertip x50 with a total weight of 59 grams. In the secondary clutch i have pink spring and straigth 45 yamah helix. I get 8800 rpm at the start, but after a while the rpm drops to 8100 and stays there. i got 130 km/h at hardpacked lake. Anoyone have an idea of how to get more speed and more rpm? I have an 46-36 helix but thhat didnt work so good either, seems like the clutching ran out to fast. sorry for bad english!

I should add I'm going to try the Gates belt next to see how it hooks up and how low the RPM drops.
Have you tried the gates yet. I thought it really grips well. Felt a harder pull ?

I haven't had a chance to break in the Gates belt yet.

Today's conditions: warm and sticky mid 30's packy snow and not a lot of it. Coolant temps ran 190 or higher pretty consistent. Top speed 83-84mph I'll have to check my GPS.

RPM 8600-8700-ish

I'll have to get a look at the clutch sheaves, but they did not seem too bad. Sled pulls hard and strong to 75-80 or so then just stops accelerating. The thing that is holding me back has to be the track.

That's what my sled pulled hard to 85 even with rpms holding at 9150 than its like it hit a wall and took awhile to blink 90. Warm temps really effect this fussy Yamaha

I have a 15 Rtx-le blue/ orange. I had a guy who is very good at Yamaha clutching but not over experienced with viper. Gave him my sled for a few weeks to play with inhis free time. He ended up putting in I believe but don't quote on it yellow silver yellow spring, 47 degree helix and drilled out centre rivet on wieghts ( because I couldnt get past 8600rpm on 1 in powder mid range ). I hit 90 mph pretty easy on 1 in powder now and 106 on road. Not saying it's the cure for all machines but really brought mine to life. I think he shimmed out my 8dn belt to because it was a little sloppy. Best $ I ever spent and very cheap to do. That 106 was very hard and not realistic trail conditions. Drilling out middle rivet really fixed mid range bogging down without trying new weights.this speed is viper speedo not gps. My engagement is 3100rpm I believe. Very happy . Now performs closer to my two strock 800 Polaris . As close as I think I'm gonna get without turbo lol. Any one interested I can check spring for sure. Price was $200. He played with turbo (14 ltx I think) and changed gears on it. Turbo hit 120. Mine beat it out of hole till about 60 then it was no competition lol. He was very impressed with bottom end on this thing.I wish I new about him a year ago and 10 min from my house.

That's pretty impressive. I am using Cotc and only have weight in tips for now. You are running stock gears and the turbo one is geared?
