21 SR Viper LTX DX
I have been reading all the posts on the Viper since early spring. I spring ordered a 15 black LTX-DX which I picked up a couple of weeks ago. I am the type of guy that basically just likes to put gas in the sled and ride. My last two sleds were an o5 RS Venture which I put 20,000 miles on and an 11 RS Venture GT which I put 16'000 miles on. My only modification was to put a set of yamaha mountain skis on them. They both had original spark plugs and the 11 had original hyfax on it when I traded it in.

I got the Viper because I do not need a 2 up sled any longer. I am now having second thoughts because of the modifications I see occurring to the Vipers, such as clutch work, turbo's, ski's, shocks etc...

My question is this. Will a stock Viper without the modifications be adequate for a basic trail rider like me? I looked at a 15 Apex XTX today thinking I should just trade and take a loss and buy the Apex to save me having to do a lot of extra things to the Viper. I do not have the time or more importantly I am not as mechanically inclined as most on this great site to be messing with all that stuff especially when the snow starts flying and it is time to ride.

I saw my first snow flake tonite in the air!!!!

Those of us doing all the upgrades are the more hardcore and demanding type. You should be able to gas and go with the sled that you ordered. You made the right choice from the sounds of it.

I rode mine basically stock all last year. All I added were a taller windshield and some better carbides. It was still the best riding sled I ever owned.

Just doing some other stuff now cuz I like working on things as a hobby.

I put on 2200 miles on a stock LTX with no problems. If you are a basic rider it will be plenty of sled.

My recollection of the Curtis/Manistique area is that it's a long way between stops. If you like to ride fast you might consider some clutching mods.

coming from the venture platform your going to gain power, and way better ride. I didnt do anything to mine and love it the way it is but some of us like to tinker or add stuff

TD Max and others, thanks for the input. That is what I was hoping to hear concerning the mods. I will give it a try this winter and hopefully it gives me the trouble free miles my last 2 Yammi's did.

Thanks

One of our club members put over 7000 kms on her Viper last year. No troubles. My wife spring ordered the exact sled you purchased because of the way it performed. Ironically, I spring ordered the 15' Apex XTX.

You will love the gas and go Viper. Quite honestly the performance stuff adds enough to beet the stock in a race BUT does not mean the stock is a BAD SLED.

Honestly I traded in an XTC and Apex both with high miles, one exhaust and clutch work other stock loved both, wonder why I do some of this stuff. Lol

This is a great sled stock~ 3% faster with cheap mods like most of us do".......now Turbos are a whole different thing and price range.

My 2 cents it is a great sled stock and some of us don't know when to leave well enough alone"................don't let my wife see this post or I will have to deny it and blame an impersonating hacker .

Like they said. The Viper stock is just a hair slower than the Nytro in my testing, and I wanted to get it up to what I thought it should be...and did as far as I wished too. But, you can certainly gas and go on the Viper, don't let us speed freaks scare you off.

That is going to be an awesome sled! I got my Viper the second week of February and put 650 miles on it. Best sled I've owned/driven, and I've driven quite a few. My XTX was awesome on trail and off trail. I kept the sled stock last year and had no problem beating a stock Nytro and getting to 95 mph (think it had a couple more but ran out of field). I had no issues other than an occasional hot start glitch, your 2015 should not have this issue. Contrary to what some might say the Viper is an excellent sled in stock form.

If I had to go back to stock I would still have a blast on Viper. I did ride it stock with just adjustments for around 1000 mi. Then like everything I own I wanted more. It's a addiction. No need at all for it.

I put 3400 miles on my viperLTX last year with no problems except for the occasional hot start. 3400 on the original hyfax and still had more miles left on them, but put a new set on for this year. If you are strictly a trail rider and not a speed freak or lake racer, you will love this sled. I think this is a great trail sled and plan on keeping mine for many years! A lot of people on here are just looking for more speed. No need to second guess your purchase.

If you got the ltx dx then you now own yamahas best riding trail sled that money can buy! Yamaha has a few updates that should be done (ecu update, fuel line inspection and reverse update) all of which are free of charge, be sure you get those done and while it's at the dealer getting that done, and unless u feel like doing it yourself, have them properly adjust the chain tensioner, shouldn't take them more than 20 mins. Since you have the tuner skis there is no need for special carbides like all other yamahas. Sit back, relax and enjoy an awesome winter!

JohnBoy - impressive mileage on the sleds you mentioned... Can't beat the 4 strokes for distance runners!
