What best Mods for Apex(the need for speed)

Yes I know traction 1st thats a given. I like your idea about thew 144" skid do u know any for sale? whats size studs I want to run longest I can without trouble, I dont mind adding more tunnel protectors if thats the answer. Race are one with traction then power. I want a base line to start the I will fine tune with stalker gun or timers. but it wouold save a lot of time if people here can point me in the right direction so we dont waste a lot of time on money trying things out.

I would caution on nitrous, I had it and it was awesome for all of the 30 seconds I was on the bottle. The rest of the time I was under clutched and over geared and it made the sled not a lot faster then a stock vector. On the bottle shes a rocket but really ask yourself how much you will spend on the button. Myself just traction, gearing, a GOOD track, clutch kit and you have a fun sled.

I have a SC on a 121" trail sled and its awesome but in a whole different league. You need the money and expertise to be able to set one up and run it. I got lucky on mine.

Yeh for this guy I am just going to clutch it, possibly, swap to a 144 skid if I can find one, and stud it. If he wants to play on the lake I told him he can use my sled. for now and get a feel for this sled before he sinks to much in it. So any help on clutching and protecting for longest length of stud with recommended would be great

The XTX skids are rare to see for sale. I've been looking for another one to buy. Maybe try some of the sled salvage yards? $600 to $800 range.
We are running the 1.325" Mega-Bites (1.723" OAL) in all of our sleds with no issues. I did put a .250" peice of UHMW on my 2011 tunnel protectors and have had no issues. We also have gone to the Woody's angle backers and these seem to work well. Roetin makes a stud called Scorpion. It has a very sharp carbide wedge tip and hooks up extremely well. The down side is they are very expensive and we have had many of the carbide tips shater and some have come completely out of the stud. We likley won't buy any more of these type.
For clutching...We have one sled with super tips and the general consensus is none of us like them: when they engage, they slam in and spins the track too easy. I've had better tuning luck with Heel Clicker weights. We are working with a set of Drag N Flys but, not found a set up to our liking yet. From what I see with other TY users, the two speeds are the best choice. I've used these on my SRX but, not the Apexs yet, so I can't help you there. Search around a little and I'm sure you can find set ups for these. We have also tried my 2011 clutch on the '07 and '08 super charged sleds. They can't pull the heavier weight in the primary. There were some guys talking about using the 2011 weights in previous Apexs...from our experience they won't work in a S.C sled, let alone a stock one.
If your friend has $5K to $6K to spend on mods, I would recomend he sell his existing sled and pay the money towards a 2011 or 2012 Apex XTX. With a good stud set up on hard pack, they are hard to beat.

I have seen 3 for sale last year asking $1000.
I found one last febuary that a guy was going to part out he goes by Laneo. He already sold the rear shock and I bought it for $750 plus shipping. The thing only has a couple hundred miles and looks new.
I sold my apex I was going to put it in,So I will sell it since I'm not going to use it.

so Whats the longest safe stud I can put In??? i dont mind putting in thicker protectors if needed just need advice

I have the same question on an 07 Attak..... What are the best/ longest/ and safest studs can run and not constantly be worrying about killing a cooler. What's everyone running and where's the best place to purchase?

In my buddies attack he ran a 1.4" cat mtn track with 1.8 extreme max studs. He had 1 1/4" drop brackets for the ear supension mount and the rear upper wheel shaft thats only on the attack and 8t drivers.

In both apex's i have 1.375 woody's.. i dont think i would go any longer, as they have kissed exhaust, and i did thro one that took out cooler.... I still have not desided on what the 40th will have. I've stretched it out to 144" but i'm worried on the whole ballooning of the track... I live on a lake/river system and we routinely cruise at the 90-110mph for many.. many miles.... anyways... I'm leaning towards the 1.325 to keep out of other parts...

I've been researching today and I like the set up's I've seen with 144 Woody's Signatuere (1.325") series set up 4-2 and all on double backers. So oyu took out a cooler using Woody's with 1.325? Was your tunnel protectors still in or out?

Mine are in, but I leave my track as loose as I can for slider wear prevention. I have plenty of black rubber on my tunnel protectors wear my track rubs, I'm assuming when I'm flying and the track balloons as it spins. If I change nothing, am I taking too big of a risk using studs if i only use 144 studs at 1.325" length? Just asking peoples educated thoughts. I am fearful of losing a cooler and may just drop thwe whole stud idea because of the potential for wrecking coolers.....

You could add a little more material to your protectors
True. But I guess my question really is whether pull thru's and studs flying out really are an issue if using double backers? Would double backers all around solve my concerns? I'm thinking it would.

I only use double backers and on other peoples sleds too.I have never seen a double tear out lus you get so much more penetration as it keeps the sud straighter rather then a single backer flexing with the track.

But there is still the chance a pull thru could happen taking out your bulk head cooler. But you also increase the chance of put a rock in your cooler.
